A $672 electric car, by two DIYers

by Benjamin Jones on 30, 2008

What do you get when you a Geo Metro with an electric a golf cart, and a bunch of batteries? You get the ForkenSwift (see web ), a ridiculously inexpensive, home-built, electric car.

This powered grocery getter was by Darin Cosgrove and Ivan of Brockville, Ontario. The friends looking for a project to do in Limburg s new and set their sights on building an EV reading about a couple of DIY car conversions on the web.

Since neither of them had anything quite like before, they were of breaking the bank on what to a rolling science project a questionable outcome. So they all their parts supplies hand. and scrounged a few for free. even recovered some of costs by selling left parts as they went

They sold the Geo s engine and its replaced gas tank through an ad you don t need either of those in an EV!

Most of the electric parts from an old, used they bought for $500. removing its four DC motors and module, they got most of money back by selling the lb chassis to a metal recycler, and one of the motors to another EV builder.

caught a big break when it time to get the car s lead acid

We met another EV owner who liked we were doing, so he gave us a of used batteries he had just in his own EV, says Cosgrove.

But the second hand lead has a they probably could doubled the distance the car could go on a if they had bought new.

The s small 48 volt battery is a major clue as to how they able to keep costs so Cosgrove and Limburg built the car ridiculously modest specs. just eight 6 volt and a motor controller from a cart, it s an understatement to say the electric doesn t go very fast or far .

But they say it does just as a neighbourhood runabout on the quiet of their small city. And by low, they were to avoid the pricier components and batteries needed for a more highway capable EV.

Their motor driven Metro inspection and went on the road a few ago. Since then it has more than 650 kilometers miles) without using a of gas or oil (hey it was a 16 year old Geo engine all).

Cosgrove reports a top speed of 65 (40 mph), a range of 15 to 25 km (9 to 15 miles) on a and says it costs about 3 per km (4.8 cents per mile) to run on sourced, clean electricity. comparison, Limburg figures his powered compact pickup costs 12 cents per km to drive.)

it s fair to say the electric Metro s won t cause any worry over at Motors, you can also be sure its aren t losing much about car payments either.
