This 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Zagato is 1 of 16, a three-time Targa Florio competitor, a Pebble Beach show car and possesses a complete ownership history from new. Find it for sale here at RM’s upcoming Monaco Auction .

When Alfa Romeo released the Veloce-equipped Giulietta Sprint in 1956, engineers were confident they had undertaken every reasonable, performance-improving modification. The standard Sprint’s 1300cc engine received a special air intake and side draft Weber carburetors, a Bendix electric fuel pump, ported and polished cylinder heads, a raised compression ratio of 9.1:1, and a complicated aluminum oil pan. Horsepower rose from 65 to 90 and the earliest Veloces even benefitted from lightweight doors, hoods, trunks and glass.

Which all seemed well and good, until Massimo Girolamo Leto di Priolo proved everyone wrong by slamming his four-day-old Giulietta Sprint Veloce into a ditch in the 1956 Mille Miglia.

The crumpled sports car was quickly taken to Milan where Zagato fashioned a sleek aluminum body. The resulting car was lower, lighter, more aerodynamic, achingly beautiful, and a winner. Victories grew quickly.

Other Veloce owners clearly recognized the advantage of the aluminum bodywork and, despite the conversion costing more than half the purchase price of the Veloce, 15 other racers took their coupes to Zagato for new bodies.

Raced in the 1958 Targa Florio as a steel-bodied Veloce, this car (s/n 06184) found its way to Zagato for conversion that same year. The Zagato would then compete in two more Targa Florios—with a best finish of 2nd in class—before changing hands many times, receiving a complete restoration and gaining considerable attention at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Photos show the Zagato displaying its eye-catching original color scheme of light blue over red leather, and the body remains as stunning today as it was in 1958. The long, low and sweeping silhouette is complimented by square cut wheel wells, covered headlights and the absence of front and rear bumpers. Underneath, the interior stands race ready with its black crinkle-finished dash, leather trimmed Zagato seats and wood rimmed steering wheel. The engine compartment displays Alfa’s beautiful twin cam engine and a pair of correct Weber carburetors.

From every angle, the Zagato is breathtaking.

This Zagato, then, is the perfect opportunity for any vintage sports car buyer desiring a fast, coach-built, and historically significant car suitable for any concours, rally or race.
