1959 Giulietta Spider takes top honors at Alfa Romeo convention

In 1965, Glen Drew of Rockville, Maryland, received a 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider as a gift from his grandfather. He drove it for five years, and then parked it, intending to revive it soon.

But other priorities intervened, especially those that come with raising a family. Finally coming to the realization that he would not be able to do the restoration himself, Glen recently turned the work over to Al Prueitt and Sons. a restoration shop in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. He got the finished car back just in time for Alfa Canadese. this year s international convention of the American and Canadian Alfa Romeo clubs held from June 17-24 in Toronto.

If you think that Glen swathed his Giulietta in bubble wrap before rolling it into an enclosed trailer for the 500-mile trip north, think again. Glen drove his car to visit in-laws in Vermont. Then he joined the Maple Leaf Mille, a 1,000-kilometer loop through eastern and northern Ontario leading up to the convention.

By the time he got back to Maryland, he had 2,200 miles on his previously zeroed-out odometer. He also had three awards from the Concorso d Eleganza judges: Best 750/101 Series car, the Ed Mackey Memorial Award for Giuliettas, and Best in Show.

Earning top place in class and the entire show is awesome, let alone after a four-day marathon, said Richard Diver, the Concorso chair. Needless to say, a well rounded win for the owner who clearly loves driving his 53-year-old car and keeps it in outstanding condition.

Of all the awards, Glen said he s most touched by the Ed Mackey Award, given in memory of a former Alfa Romeo Club of America president and open only to Giuliettas that have been driven from home and have been entered for judging in the Concorso. I was surprised to get the Best in Class, because there was a beautiful Giulietta SZ Coda Tronca in the same class, and I m overwhelmed by the Best in Show, he said.

I certainly knew it was well done, Glen said. My goal was to get it back to the way it was when I got it from the original owner, not the way it was when it left the factory.  That explains the driving lamps and fender-mounted mirrors, as well as a couple of other modifications you can t see in the photo, its electric cooling fan and electric fuel pump.

Though Glen has been a member of AROC for 27 years, the Giulietta is the only Alfa Romeo he s ever owned. We call it The Alfa that s its only name, he said.
