2013 Audi A8L Review

This was supposed to be my easiest car review ever. It is not often you end up reviewing the same car you already own.  It did not exactly work out that way however.

While most of the features are exactly the same as my 2012 Audi A8L, the 2013 model features a new engine.  In the previous editions of the A8, it came with a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8.  The new 2013 Audi  A8 L now comes standard with a 3.0-liter V6 with a supercharger.  There is a loss of almost 40-horses, but honestly it is hard to tell the difference in power.

The new V6 is rated at 333-horses versus 372 in the previous versions.  The new six-banger is responsive and smooth.  Like the 2012 edition, the new A8 has an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The A8 is a large, all-wheel drive luxury sedan that features Audi s exclusive Quattro system.  The handling is terrific in this car even though it weighs close to 4300 pounds.  The ride is neither soft nor firm to me, but somewhere right in the middle, which was one of the attractions I had to this car.

This car comes as a regular A8 and also the A8-L.  The L designation means it is the long-wheelbase version which gives you 5.4-inches of additional back seat room.  The A8-L has one of the largest backseats of any sedan.

The A8 comes with an impressive list of standard features including power sunroof, 18-way power seats, rear window shade, power self-closing doors, Bose stereo, rearview camera, navigation system, and 19 wheels.

My test car has the $3000 Driver Assistance package which gives you adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and Audi pre-sense plus which anticipates and takes action if the car sense there is going to be an accident.  This A8 has the LED headlights, a $1600 option.

New for 2013 is start/stop technology which turns the engine off at stops but continues to run the air conditioning and other power options.

The curious part of the engine change is that the fuel economy is not as good as the old 4.2-liter V8.  If I am going to lose almost 40-horses, I expect to gain fuel economy, but this 2013 is rated the same on the highway, and loses 1-mile per gallon in the city.

On the plus side, Audi lowered the price of the 2013 by roughly $6500.

I liked the A8-L enough to buy one last year and still enjoy the car every time I get behind the wheel.  It is a joy to drive in every way!
