Audi A8 L Hybrid 2013 Review

During the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show Audi rejoined the hybrid auto market with their latest creation, the production-ready Audi A8 L Hybrid 2013. The A8 Hybrid brings new technology to the table and boasts a highly efficient mix of performance, luxury and fuel efficiency. Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect from this luxurious sedan.

The A8 L Hybrid 2013 combines a 2.0 liter TFSI four-cylinder 211 horsepower gasoline engine with an electric motor that develops 54 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Together, the gasoline and electric motor will be able to develop 245 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

We must point out however, that the Audi A8 L Hybrid stands out mostly due to two unique features. The first interesting part about the Audi A8 L Hybrid is that it’s a front-wheel drive, and whereas the hybrids usually get this kind of treatment, sedans of this size are expected to come with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The second interesting feature is the transmission. The Audi A8 L Hybrid comes with a modified eight-speed tiptronic gearbox in front of which Audi engineers fitted a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Judging by what the Audi engineers have reported, the outcome is a luxurious sedan able to deliver both fuel-efficient and sporty performance.

The energy storage is provided by a lithium-ion battery found at the back of the sedan, and the result of this entire system used by the Audi A8 L Hybrid 2013 is the ability to travel at roughly 62 mph on electric power alone, or cover 1.86 miles at 37 mph with zero emissions. As for fuel consumption, the standard cycle will only require 37 miles per gallon.

There are however three different modes to choose from while driving the Audi A8 L Hybrid . There’s the EV mode which gives priority to the electric drive, D mode which engages both the electric motor and the 2.0 liter engine, and S mode, which obviously stands for Sport mode. Needless to say, S mode will not care much about fuel efficiency and will crank up the performance dial.

As for the Audi A8 L Hybrid design, there’s not much difference between the standard Audi A8 and the hybrid one, the later variant featuring a unique set of 18-inch wheels, hybrid badging and an exclusive Arctic Silver paintjob.

As expected the Audi A8 L Hybrid comes loaded with lots of features and equipment including an optional MMI navigation system, radar-based adaptive cruise control, stop go, camera-based speed limit detection and night vision just to name a few.

As for availability, the Audi A8 L Hybrid 2013 is expected to be launched on the automotive market later this year.

The Audi A8 and the long-wheelbase A8 L are the sportiest luxury sedans in their class. The Audi flagship combines dynamic exterior design and sporty handling with supreme comfort convenience equipment and luxurious interior design. The Audi A8 boasts a lightweight aluminum body and powerful, highly efficient engines.

The body

The sporty, elegant and distinctive body of the Audi A8 is an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF), with only the B-pillars made of ultra high-strength steel. Roughly 40 percent lighter than a comparable steel body while also impressing with high rigidity and excellent vibration comfort, it is an exemplary demonstration of Audi ultra-lightweight construction. The body of the A8 earned Audi the Euro Car Body Award, the highest accolade for innovative car body design.

The optional LED headlights are another high-end solution.

The Audi A8 and A8 L are available with five direct-injection V6 and V8 engines: two gasoline units and three TDI units. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) is the entry-level engine. It consumes just 6.0 liters per 100 km (39.20 US mpg) in the EU driving cycle.

The 4.2 TDI with 258 kW (350 hp) produces the most torque 800 Nm (590.05 lb-ft).

3.0 TFSI quattro with 213 kW (290 hp)

4.2 FSI quattro with 273 kW (372 hp)

3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp)

3.0 TDI quattro with 184 kW (250 hp)

3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with 184 kW (250 hp)

4.2 TDI quattro with 258 kW (350 hp)

The standard eight-speed tiptronic features closely-spaced gears while still featuring a wide spread for reduced fuel consumption. Its control system is purely electronic, operated with an elegant selector level and paddles on the steering wheel. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive, standard in almost all models, has a distinctly sporty and rear-biased character.

On request, the sport differential dynamically distributes the forces between the rear wheels; this feature is standard with the 4.2 TDI.

The A8 simultaneously offers both luxurious ride comfort and sporty handling. The wheel control arms are made of aluminum. The brake discs measure up to 400 millimeters (15.75 in) in diameter, depending on the engine. The standard adaptive air suspension with variable damping is integrated into the Audi drive select dynamics system.

It can be complemented with the optional dynamic steering.

Passenger compartment

The interior of the Audi A8 enchants with light and elegant lines, craftsman-like fit and finish, and extraordinary attention to the smallest of details. Audi offers the rear seat passengers the option of two power-adjustable and heated individual rear seats, which can be paired with the optional continuous center console. The individual seats can also be equipped with optional ventilation and massage functions, and features such as a folding table and a cool box make the passengers’ stay even more enjoyable.

The Audi A8 L is 13 centimeters (5.12 in) longer than the standard version in both wheelbase and overall length. It is available with an optional relaxation seat with power footrest. A number of seating options are available, including the massage function and rear seat entertainment.

The Audi A8 features a high degree of technical intelligence. This is manifested in the optional MMI touch operating and navigation system with touchpad, in its networking with other vehicle systems and in the assistance systems. The radar-based adaptive cruise control with stop go function works closely together with the Audi pre sense safety system.

Further highlights include Audi side assist, the camera-based speed limit detection, Audi lane assist, the night vision assistant with highlighting of detected pedestrians and the parking system plus with 360 camera.

Audi also offers many attractive infotainment modules. The optional Bluetooth online car phone, an extension of MMI navigation plus, includes an integrated WLAN hotspot and uses UMTS to deliver tailored Internet services for the driver to the car. Great sound is provided by the Bose sound system and the Advanced Sound System from Bang Olufsen, which boasts 19 speakers.

The ultimate in luxury is offered by the A8 L W12, which Audi has built as an exclusive, limited-production concept series of just 50 units. The interior is adorned with leather from the luxury brand Poltrona Frau and with olive ash natural inlays.

Another exclusive version is the Audi A8 L Security armored vehicle, for which many special safety features are available in addition to its strong armor.

The Audi A8 hybrid

Scheduled to launch this year, the Audi A8 hybrid combines the best of two worlds. The drivetrain has many features in common with the A6 hybrid. The gasoline engine, a 2.0 TFSI, produces 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque while the electric motor produces 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft) of torque.

Peak system power is 180 kW (245 hp) and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of torque.

The two powerplants are mounted one directly behind the other and connected via a clutch. They deliver their power to the front wheels via a highly-modified eight-speed tiptronic. Energy storage is provided in the form of a lithium-ion battery with a nominal capacity of 1.3 kWh mounted in the back of the vehicle.

The luxury sedan can travel up to a speed of 100 km/h (62.14 mph) on electric power alone, and covers around three kilometers (1.86 miles) with zero local emissions at a speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph). In the standard cycle it consumes just 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (37.34 US mpg), which corresponds to only 147 grams of CO2/km (236.57 g/mile).

Audi A8 L W12

The A8 L W12 is the top model in the line. It is powered by a supremely powerful gasoline engine that is unusually short and lightweight. The normally aspirated, 6.3 liter engine with direct injection produces 368 kW (500 hp) and 625 Nm (460.98 lb-ft) of torque, yet is extremely refined.

In addition to all the qualities of the model series, the luxury sedan also offers sporty performance. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) is completed in 4.7 seconds; the governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) is just a formality. The Audi A8 L with the W12 engine is also available in a special armored version.

The equipment, data and prices specified in this document refer to the model range offered in Germany. Subject to change without notice; errors and omissions excepted.
