Audi R8 E-tron Is Fastest EV at Nurburgring

It’s not yet available, but a new electric car will be on the market in a few months. And it’s hot. In fact, it’s one of the most desirable cars available today. We’ve seen Tony Stark driving one. This is the Audi R8, the supercar with a mix of Italian sexiness with German reliability.

A supercar for everyday driving, the R8 was launched in late 2006. An electric version was first seen as a concept in September 2009, and the production model will be officially unveiled this September at the Paris motor show. We don’t have all the specs yet, but the car just established a record for the fastest production EV at the famous Nurburgring race track.

The Audi R8 e-tron did one lap of the mighty 12.92-mile track in 8:09 minutes. For those not familiar with Nurburgring lap times, this is as fast as a base Porsche Boxster. So it’s a very good time considering the electric car is substantially heavier.

Though at 3,924 pounds, it’s not that bad for a car carrying a 49 kWh battery pack. Even a 2-seater. The regular R8 V10 is only 300 pounds lighter, and it’s faster at the Nurburgring because this track is just so fast. It has two long straights.

It takes a car that can accelerate real fast from to 100 to 150 mph to make a good time there, and it helps a lot if top speed is over 170 mph. The R8 e-tron is governed to a top speed of 155 mph, and in most countries, the car will be sold with a 124 mph governor (200 kph). So people who crave a high top speed will keep on buying the gas R8, but all the others should have a closer look to this electric version.

Audi says it can go 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, and with 605 lb-ft of torque, acceleration will be uninterrupted right up to its top speed. The 560 hp R8 V10 GT cannot beat that. Power is 280 kW (375 hp) from two motors sending their power to the rear wheels. There were early prototypes with four motors and all wheel drive, but it seems Audi has settled for RWD for its production model. That allowed the engineers to put battery cells in the transmission tunnel, with the car having a T-shaped battery, much like the Chevrolet Volt. only shorter.

There is some kind of a torque vectoring at play, Markus Winkelhock, the Audi driver who set the record, said it really helped him achieving the record. But nobody knows yet if it will be enough to make this Audi R8 e-tron, the first electric supercar. The norm in Europe is a top speed above 300 kph (186 mph), so it’s well below that.
