If such a list of idols existed for the auto industry, the 2014 Audi A8 L 3.0 TDI sedan would likely be included. Devotees have been pleading and praying to the Automotive Gods to bring diesel power to America, and finally, God and Uncle Sam answer.

After General Motors’ slipshod diesel duds from the 1980s, automakers have been loath to pump diesel back into the American conscious. The diesel faithful have been holding onto hope, though, and this year, Audi unleashes one of the coolest diesel-powered sedans to ever run in America: the A8 L TDI.

The A8 is Audi’s flagship vehicle: spacious, discrete, and opulent, tailor-made for Your White-Collar Highness. At $78,000, it is not cheap. Yet among ultra-luxury executive cars it has a reputation as a bit of a bargain, and the all-new A8 TDI only builds on that foundation.

Luxury sedans are both big and fast, and that means greedy. Many struggle to achieve 25 mpg on the highway, yet the A8 achieves up to 36 mpg. With a range of almost 900 miles, it is a veritable camel. Its turbocharged V6 engine produces a gargantuan 406 lb-ft of torque, most of it available at start-up.

An automatic gearbox, Audi’s tried-and-true eight-speed automatic with sport paddle shifters, directs power to all four wheels. In normal driving, the rear wheels adopt 60 percent of the available power. Quattro all-wheel drive monitors the road in milliseconds to instantly respond to road conditions, and it may route up to 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels when necessary.

Every athlete knows that what one drinks makes a difference in the game. The A8 is no different. It drinks diesel, and that means it has enough torque to whip up its own tornado. The 4,600-pound beast whirls to 60 mph in a mere 6.4 seconds.

Yet unlike lesser mortals, the A8 runs the race with nary a murmur, wiggle, or jiggle. It rides smooth as silk. It is to driving what the Geo Metro is to, well, not driving.

Now, there are some poor saps that are quick to damn the A8 because it drinks diesel. Yet the A8 has no irritating clatter, aces stringent emissions tests, and is negligibly more expensive than gasoline-powered competitors. But, to be frank, no one will purchase the Audi A8L because of what it drinks.

The A8 TDI will be bought on the basis of its prestigability.

What is prestigability? It is the mashing of two words – prestige and usability – and the intersection of two ways of life. When a buyer who makes $35,000 purchases a car, he or she prioritizes usability.

When a customer who rakes up $350,000 purchases a car, he or she seeks prestige. The A8 pitches camp at the junction.

To the $35,000 car customer: Keep on believin’! The A8 L is bigger than your imagination. With its long wheelbase, it actually has quite a bit more space in the back than the front (more than 40 inches of legroom).

Its trunk, however, is little bigger than a Toyota Corolla’s.

The A8’s most popular calling card is its attention to detail. All four windows are one-touch up/down; the headlamps clean themselves with heated water; the MMI infotainment system responds to the touchscreen, voice controls, and a handwriting pad; all seats are heated and swathed in supple animal hides. Where does the list end? It does not.

The forthcoming 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will likely pose a credible threat, but as of now the Audi A8 has the best interior in the game.

To the $350,000 customer: The Audi A8 TDI will make a great addition to your garage! Consider this: The cockpit is almost completely customizable. Both front seats feature 12-way power-adjustability; the driver’s seat has memory functions, and the steering wheel tilt and telescopes for the best fit.

Rearward and forward visibility is augmented by parking sensors. When muggy days arrive, four-zone automatic climate control keeps each passenger comfy and cozy. On rainy ones, the power sunroof and rear sunshades may be closed. (See all features ).

If ‘twere 2013, the Audi A8 TDI would have no worthwhile competitors. However, the redesign and sumptuous Mercedes E250 BlueTec and the sporty and affordable BMW 535d are both formidable rivals for the new year. The BMW actually undercuts the Audi by more than $20,000, although it is neither as large nor as luxurious, and the E250 BlueTec promises record-busting gas mileage.

But then again, whoever complained about more idols?
