Audi confesses it may have a little late to the electro-mobility its mostly Japanese rivals dancing and show-boating long the German luxury brand rang the doorbell.

Audi wants to arrive with a While other brands out tiny plug-in city with modest performance and geeky looks, Audi’s R8 supercar is leading the German electric charge.

It’s a of an eye-catcher in which to arrive at the vehicle (EV) soiree a supercar dubbed the R8 E-Tron (almost silently) whooshes standstill to 100km/h in a Porsche-like 4.8

With its prodigious acceleration a Scalectrix car jumping from the R8 E-Tron quattro will enthusiast drivers with a bent when it goes limited production in late

With looks to match its the car has demonstrated that brands need to create cartoonish vehicles that appear to be the outcome of a few moments of unseemly between a Smart car and a Tata

The R8 looks gorgeous and its aluminium construction is suitably high-tech for a car of the

The R8 E-Tron is a full EV with a battery pack mounted and an asynchronous electric motor on of the four wheels, making it a all-wheel-drive vehicle. Power to the wheels via a single-staged transmission and input shafts.

It wasn’t the car to develop but Audi sees it as a to integrate more expensive into a premium sports EV. It is a golden opportunity to catch the eye of the media; hence Audi’s invitation for Drive to get behind the of this breakthrough supercar for a road loop in Germany.

Our of Audi’s electric future end with the R8. The brand has also a three-door E-Tron version of its runabout, the A1. The R8 E-Tron may be the show-stopper but the A1 is the car likely to generate serious volumes.

The final part of the is a drive in Audi’s first petrol-electric hybrid, based on the Q5

In the metal, our R8 E-Tron looks and ready to excite. After into the racy Recaro you twist the key and instead of the usual roar from a V8 or V10, nothing. Just a gauge in a familiar cluster on the dash advises you’re ready.

the gear lever from P to D and the accelerator unleashes a very change of scenery, accompanied by growl from the fat, tyres and a little resonance within the car. It’s a prototype, the man from Audi

There is no tachometer, of course, by a dial representing the recuperation of the energy supply and the output. You can the level of recuperation by pressing on the steering wheel, influencing the recovery and braking power of the motors and so extending the range.

head of pre-development of vehicle Dr Michael Korte, says the R8 is not an autobahn-storming machine designed for runs on Europe’s high-speed He compares it to a powerful sports a mix of fun and technology that is good for bursts of stunning speed.

a combined output of 230kW of and about 680Nm of torque misleadingly claims 4500Nm but is the output at the wheels rather the motors), the R8’s four can accelerate and decelerate individually impressive exactness thanks to a management system.

Similar to the Audi R8, about 70 per cent of the acts at the rear wheels in operation, with the remaining 30 per going to the front wheels. wheelspin occur, the software the balance in a fraction of a second.

The control of the four motors allows so-called torque the selective acceleration of individual and, therefore, active of torque. Any loss of traction in wheels, such as understeer and is countered quickly using power boosts and brake

Behind the cockpit are the large, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and the used to control the power Impressively, engineers have a 42:58 front-to-rear weight matching the regular R8.

Audi the production R8 E-Tron will no more than the V8-engined R8 In its final evolutionary stage for the R8 E-Tron’s battery is expected to be for a range of about 250 kilometres manufacturer claims of EV range are optimistic).

While the R8 E-Tron may be the grabber, the E-Tron versions of small city runabout, the A1, and its soft-roader, the Q5, are also on hand for our drive.

The A1 E-Tron is a three-door that uses a tiny engine to extend its range its battery reserves are depleted. The comes in the form of a compact engine used not as an alternative to the but, specifically, to put energy into the battery when such as on a longer-than-normal commute or a climb.

From the driver’s seat, the A1 E-Tron looks much a regular A1 that goes on here next month. that is, for unfamiliar gauges terms such as E-Tron that give the all-clear to D on the gearbox selector and hit the accelerator for motoring using only the system.

In this mode, the is about 50 kilometres good for most daily commutes. The Group, which owns says research shows of the 60 per cent of Germans who travel to by car, almost half less than 10 kilometres and a travel less than 25 Recharging every 50 kilometres there would be no need to use any

Based on a suite of information the car (such as driving style, temperature, navigational data), it when to move to range-extender to replenish the battery that an electric motor mounted in the front. The driver may also a button on the dash to trigger the extender’s vibration-free and quiet engine.

The 254cc petrol is fed by a 12-litre fuel tank and a 15kW generator able to the A1 E-Tron’s range by an extra 200 True, it’s consuming petrol a meagre 1.9 litres per 100 but at the same time the battery is and increasing the drive it supplies to the

The lush torque of an electric is evident almost the instant you the throttle and there’s a feeling of limitless thrust, uninhibited by the to change gears. The front are fed a minimum 45kW of power and of torque, with peak as high as 75kW and 240Nm. The flows to the front axle via a transmission flanged to the electric

The almost-silent travel is eerie, just a light whine and a tyre noise discernible.

acceleration from rest to is 10.2 seconds, with a top of more than 130km/h. not as impressive as a regular A1 but hardly a for most commuters. Obvious, is that there are few compromises the A1’s adaptation to the electric It still seats four, is cabin cooling and heating, a sound system sits in the and the cargo area is its usual

The T-shaped lithium-ion battery is hidden under the rear of the centre tunnel and below the seats, giving excellent distribution.

Features such as internet connectivity with navigation and a wireless hot-spot that it’s a car more to contemporary city transport.

The A1 E-Tron also destroys misconception that EVs are heavier regular cars because of the pack. The E-Tron version about the same as the regular A1 as is no heavy multi-stage transmission or engine and no big fuel tank.

A for the standard household plug used to recharge the A1 is hidden the Audi badge on the grille. A battery requires less three hours’ charging from a 240-volt grid or 30 for high-voltage fast charging.

On the the large electric motor the A1 E-Tron can convert deceleration into electric current. is fed back to the electrical system by as a generator once the driver the accelerator. In city traffic, it can almost one-third of its energy.

The leader for the A1 E-Tron, Dietrich is evangelical about his baby, when rather than if to about a production version. It is a concept with premium the space, the ease of operation, features such as a sound he says. It’s a true

While the ultimate goal is to pure electric propulsion, is also developing more hybrid vehicles for the short-term.

The first mass-market hybrid is set for and US showrooms by the middle of next although right-hand-drive versions are

The Q5 Hybrid Quattro pitched as a mid-size soft-roader with the of a V6 and the fuel economy of a four-cylinder diesel offers the practicality of the Q5 here.

A brief drive in Audi’s hometown, adds to the claims. The direct-injection, turbo-charged 2.0-litre four, and the associated motor sandwiched in between the and the gearbox, together have a output of 180kW and 480Nm. gives the vehicle excellent along with impressive of 7.1 seconds from 0-100km/h. Top is 222km/h.

Fuel use on the official cycle is a little less 7.0L/100km.

There’s some that the compact hybrid will make it to market as are plenty of Audi engineers who view diesel as a superior technology. However, the US market has slow to embrace diesel and is keen to have a rival for the RX450h hybrid soft-roader.

The Q5 looks and feels normal with no loss of cabin or room. Press the start and a hybrid ready sign the driver the Q5 is set to move. Slip the selection lever into D and you off in pure electric mode.

An EV on the dash provides an extended mode. Press it and the petrol starts.

Audi first eased hybrid development in 1989 its Duo concept based on the 100 Avant. The Q5 is the of three generations of development.

from the Q5 range on sale include modifying the engine and introducing the stop-start requirements of a (at rest, both power are deactivated). It gains an eight-speed gearbox, electromechanical steering and brakes beneath 19-inch

The lithium-ion batteries, weighing 38 kilograms, are stored where the wheel is normally housed. A instrument cluster now incorporates a battery charge meter, looks similar to a fuel and a larger dial that whether the car is using power the engine or battery or is recovering under deceleration.

The powertrain of the Q5 can also be used in other with longitudinally mounted the new A8 and the as-yet unseen A6 are prime

When is not golden

Premium car makers spend inordinate time and reducing noise and vibration, a process aimed at cocooning in glorious silence.

Electric have no exhaust pipe and emit no sounds of acceleration and changes.

Gliding through the EVs are almost silent at speeds up to Beyond that, some noise can be heard but it is not loud to warn pedestrians particularly the of approaching danger.

In the US and Japan, it is law for silent cars to have a noise source and other are likely to follow.

Audi are hard at work developing artificial sounds for its E-Tron

It’s not just a matter of says the acoustics chief at Ralf Kunkel. It is also a of how the Audi of the future should

That sound will not be of a engine, nor of a jet aeroplane or anything in such as the rustle of leaves.

offers a clue: The [EV] will be new and unusual. The Audi RSQ in the I, Robot gives an indication.

50km range ok for the daily Clearly this car wasn’t for Australia, my daily commute is closer to 50km EACH Forget if you want to pop to the shops on the way then I guess.

This is why electric cars are dead they can’t go far enough and too long (and too much to recharge, and are unlikely to get any better. on the hydrogen.

Electric cars are far from technology. cell technology today in the form of batteries weigh 1/3 of lithium ion, up to 5 times longer and recharge in not hours.

The only reason technology isn’t mainstream is because of politics and powerbroking oil

Once this power is played out we will be seeing a new of power cell technology totally eclipses what we about today.

a that is pure green. you ever seen the environmental of producing those batteries?

Commenter Tebinium Date and November 22, 2010, 10:49AM

How can you say its a technology, look at all the research that went into engines how can you expect battery vehicles to match that only now we are starting to see some RD happening. Do i need to remind power output economy had back the 50s? This take decades to evolve its a its only happening now not 20 years

Is there a subject misunderstood than electric Judging by the ridiculous and completely comments that always an article like the above, I guess not.

@Allie so because this particular can’t fulfil your requirements, the entire EV industry is Never mind those in Europe and the USA that indicate commutes are under 40km a day and ideal for electrification.

@ Tebinium again, you are woefully misinformed. batteries contain no lead, mercury or PBB’s, nor heavy or toxic materials. They are fully recyclable.

And before you otherwise, the studies all show well-to-wheel emissions for EVs are superior to ICE even if recharged from power stations. Of course, the improve dramatically if you can source or all of your electricity from or low-carbon sources such as

But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good

Commenter Biff Location Date and time November 22, 4:48PM

@ Allie — I to add, you also didn’t the part about the range ie the AI e-Tron is a series hybrid. you go past 50km the small kicks in, running at its optimum efficiency point, to generate for the battery. You are using 1.9L per far better than a Prius.

You have to stop or plug in for it to do As for hydrogen, how are you going to produce and that cleanly?

But if you do commute per day (I’ll assume you live in the then of course an efficient ICE car is your best bet. given there are billions of other than you on the planet, I say some at least will be suited to EVs than you.

Biff Location Sydney and time November 22, 2010,

@ biff hahah..thanks for clearing up all the matey 🙂

Commenter rastaman zion Date and time 23, 2010, 10:50AM

@ Biff, the information you’re quoting into account losses in distance transfer from stations to power point? I agree that EV will prove superior in general use for the fact that electric are more compact and have a wider efficiency range than ICEs do. However the further development of ICE tech inc I feel there won’t be replacement of ICE, regardless of the of battery technology for at least 10 or years.
