…Looking Electric Sports Car

Audi presented their electric concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, dubbed the e-tron. It is based on their R8 sports car and underwent heavy modification for transformation to the e-tron.

A few months later Audi brought a drivable prototype of the electric car to the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2009.

Since then the e-tron has evolved, with Audi presenting a second generation e-tron at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This version of the Audi e-tron electric concept car is shorter, has had the body slightly redesigned, and incorporates engineering changes such as two electric motors at the rear wheels instead of one electric motor at each wheel.

Audi has stated the e-tron electric concept car will be rolling off production lines in 2012. That timeline is consistent with several other manufacturers lining up electric car and hybrid car offerings as well. The Tesla Model S Sedan is scheduled for delivery to customers late in 2012, as one example.

In a gasoline powered automobile there is a certain degree of leeway available for inefficiencies, even though the need for aerodynamically efficient gas powered automobiles has increased substantially over the past two decades. In an electric car however there is no leeway for inefficiency whatsoever. Every square inch of the external surface has a specific role to play in the efficiency of the electric car under use, including the bottom of the electric car that can now be flat given you don’t have air-drag artifacts like mufflers, pipes, and drive-shafts anymore.

In the e-tron we see that concept was applied to the side-view mirrors. The Audi e-tron sports two small rear-pointing cameras with a smaller cross section than traditional side-view mirrors, that feed the image to a small display mounted just inside side window.

It will be interesting to see if this idea makes it to the production models.

Unlike the Tesla Model S Sedan, the Audi e-tron (assuming it will in fact make it to production) will not be targeted to the general public. Current reports suggest a price of around $200,000 as well as a limit of 1,000 to be produced worldwide.

Certainly a looker, it will undoubtedly be a blur off the green light as well as having some … technology inside.

But first it has to be built and someone must be willing to pay $200,000 for one.

But, it’s likely there will be some willing to pay for the prestige.
