First drive review: A1 e-tron dual-mode hybrid

is it?

This is Audi’s second A1 concept, combining the best of the range-extending principle and conventional hybrids.

Audi showed its e-tron concept in 2010. The prototypes of which have so far up 31,000 miles in the Munich featured a small battery (with a 30-mile range) the front wheels driven by a electric motor. It was backed up by a 254cc Wankel rotary under the boot floor generated 15kW and added 120 to the range.

This, the second A1 proposal, combines the best of the Volt-style range-extending principle conventional Prius-type plug-in

Described as a ‘dual-mode’ hybrid, the uses a brand new 1.5-litre, engine which develops and 147lb ft. This engine is with a 67bhp/155lb ft electric which, Audi says, mostly as a starter and alternator but can the petrol engine.

The second motor — mounted on the side of the transmission from the engine — produces and 184lb ft of torque. This drives directly into the speed transmission, which, in drive’s the A1’s front Between the engine and alternator and the main electric drive is a simple clutch which the engine/generator to be engaged and disengaged the rest of the drivetrain.

In urban at speeds of up to 34mph, the A1 is driven by the electric motor and battery and it promises an impressive 56 miles on the battery.

If the battery pack is running electricity from the engine/generator is to drive the motor. It’s to run up to 81mph in pure electric but, from 34mph, the allows the three-cylinder engine to drive the transmission. The smaller motor acts as back-up to reduce fuel consumption and to assist during hard

Above 81mph, the combustion does all the work.

What is it

Surprisingly refined. We had the chance to try out Audi engineers call a prototype. The e-tron prototype was to a production A1 and did not seem to have boot space, which is for such a small vehicle.

Pull the gear lever ‘drive’ and the e-tron pulls in silence on battery power and has the torque and seamless delivery of a car powered by an electric motor a single-speed transmission. Above the the new three-cylinder engine meshes the transmission without the driver — a product of the engine spun up to the correct operating before the clutch engages and it seemed very smooth and although there is a distinctive, if ‘thrum’ under hard

Officially, this e-tron has and a 0-62mph sprint time of than 9sec. In reality, the A1 feels quicker than With both the engine and running, the A1 is deceptively swift on the road and impressively smooth and at urban speeds.

Audi’s new front-drive hybrid seems — even at stage — superior to the Prius’s conventional hybrid and the range-extender with high-speed assist.

What’s most is the relatively simple engine and motor layout and a single-speed which means it could be less expensive than production hybrids.

Should I buy

On this brief showing, Audi wouldn’t confirm this new type of hybrid was a dead cert for production but it superior to many existing systems. It is less complex and refined than the range-extender in the Chevy Volt and the conventional drivetrain and CVT gearbox in the Prius.

And, although the new Golf cars will be launched a more conventional plug-in (which couples a diesel electric motor, DSG gearbox and pack), it is likely that compact and potentially less set-up will be deployed in the Polo family of cars 2015.
