The Audi A6 Allroad is well suited to winter driving, says James Foxall

The Audi A6 Allroad Quattro 3.0 TDI I’m running is essentially a slightly fancier version of the regular Audi A6 Avant, with a hint of off-roader style. It sits on clever adaptable air suspension that enables you to adjust the ground clearance and it has Hill Descent Control, too.

Of course, the number of Allroad owners who will actually venture off the road is debatable and it’s easy to argue that the £5,500 price premium over a regular A6 is a tad steep. But for those who need it, the trick suspension gives the Allroad the ability to hitch up its skirts and take to the rough, which I wouldn’t fancy in the regular model.

To my eyes, the one thing it’s lacking is electric seats. A luxury, yes, but hardly state-of-the-art, and in such a comfortable, well-appointed car you do feel slightly oafish climbing in and adjusting the driver’s seat manually.

The current fuel economy of the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel is hovering around the 38mpg mark and I’m not anticipating that will get any better because the car has recently been shod with a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sports.

Of course, with a hefty unladen weight of 1,855kg, the car is never going to feel agile. That’s obviously not the point of it. But combined with the permanent all-wheel drive, the set of winter tyres makes its relationship with the road feel incredibly reassuring.

The tyres were fitted at Portsmouth Audi and the attentive service I received was light years ahead of Battersea Audi in London a few years ago. Where Battersea seemed interested only in flogging me a newer Audi, the Portsmouth workshop was full of older cars.

Swapping the wheels and tyres was quick and they even gave the car a once-over when they’d done that to ensure the fluids were topped up.

One thing they couldn’t do anything about was the confusingly erratic start/stop system. Sometimes it’s so keen it cuts the engine when you’ve rolled to a halt to select reverse for a parking manoeuvre. At other times it doesn’t stop the engine at all.

It’s not spoiling my relationship with the A6 Allroad; you just don’t expect that sort of random behaviour from a German car.
