BMW i8 the Future of Sports Cars

folks, is the future of the sports

BMW showed us the i8 Concept quite time ago, and we expected it to be a of concept. But damn if they t just unveil the production at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor We weren t expecting that.

Not that, but the production car looks close to the concept. That is sexy.

Why is this the future of cars?

With the new CAFE looming closer and making car jobs harder, car companies to find new and innovative ways to to all buyers needs.

This they have to find to make sports cars fun and while also keeping economy as high as possible.

means that in the future, we ll be fewer 6+ liter V8s making horsepower and more small or diesel engines mated to systems. They ll still decent power the i8 gets an 362 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque from a d 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and system but the big change is going to be lightness . 362 hp from a 3,285 lb car is damn good.

The power-to-weight ratio is becoming and more important nowadays, and the BMW i8 is the of the revolution for modern sports

We ve gone very, very far as much power as possible our road cars I mean, you can buy a car from the dealer that damn near 1,000 hp you re millionaire,) you re doing alright.

But now it s time to start working on the side of the power-to-weight ratio.

Look at the LaFerrari for example: 923 hp a 6.3-liter V12 and their hybrid system, good for 220 mph and a 0-62 of under three seconds. And it 2,767 lbs less than a Corolla . Of course, it costs over $1 million, which is why I m not it as this example; it s unobtainable. with the Mclaren P1 and Porsche 918 .

Back to the i8.

The BMW i8 is obtainable. Expensive, It s made from carbon has all sorts of wild tech, and just look at it.

What s it cost me?

The production BMW i8 is set to clock in at $135,700 for the 2015 model which of course, is expensive for us mortals.

But frankly, you could consider a bargain. You re getting a next-gen car from BMW . that s literally on the edge of consumer-based lightweight sports cars. This is futuristic stuff right

What else could you buy $136k?

You could get a spec Audi R8 V8, an Aston Martin V8 or Porsche 911, for a few examples. All cars, mind you, but the i8 is as fast (specs below), and let s be here those cars are a a dozen in big cities.

What are the then?

Performance

This is a car, so let s get to performance first.

to 62 mph comes up in 4.4 seconds . up to an electronically top speed of 155 mph . Pretty much the or even slightly better the competitors listed above.

The teeny little 1.5-liter gas engine puts 231 hp to the rear . as it should, via a 6-speed automatic while the electric motors out an extra 131 hp to the front wheels by way of a gearbox.

The totals: 362 hp and 420 lb-ft.

lots of ones and zeros be thrown around inside the car to all that under control.

And AWD, this thing s to be a little devil on the track.

Economy Range

Under the test cycle, the i8 managed to get 94 mpg . is, needless to say, damn

That s due to the car being able to 22 miles on full electric so no fill-ups for short commutes if you re to keep your right under control (yeah,

It can travel at up to 75 mph without using any and the total range, like about any car, is 310 miles .

And by it in, you ll get 80% charge in about 2 hours. So to and back, this thing s a steal.

But what about

So, the BMW i8, you might just be able to buy in 2014, beats the pants off the R8, 911, and V8 Vantage.

But we re missing the important thing about cars.

Sure, the i8 makes of sense on paper, it gets of power, craploads of fuel and it looks just downright

But the growl, the sound, the feel, the The startup roar of a properly-tuned V8, the throttle. The sound and feel of a downshift.

That s the best stuff $100k+ sports cars, and s what the i8 lacks . Pumping sounds into the cockpit t cut it. You can t roll the windows down and through a tunnel salivating the reverberation.

I care far too much that stuff, and I know I m not

What are your thoughts on the i8?
