NY Auto Show: Notes the EV Press Conference

I had the pleasure of the EV Press Conference on the second day of the 2010 New York Auto The event was right after s press conference, filled loud indie rock, shows, and the big reveal of their new The EV press event was much low key, and really a sequence of fire, five minute from five EV companies.

Amp Vehicles, Mini, Mitsubishi, and PEP Stations all gave a quick of their vehicles, goals, and

First up was Steve Burns, CEO of Amp Vehicles .  Amp does high conversions of domestic ICE vehicles to electric drive.  The Midwestern is currently converting the 2010 Equinox as well as 2007-2009 Sky and Pontiac Solstice convertibles.  brought a converted Sky and Equinox, were definitely the sexiest electric cars driving at the show.

Anyways, Burns focused on the Equinox, a SUV truly shows that vehicles are just as capable as internal combustion predecessors. The Amp crossover has a 150 mile range, 90 per hour top speed, and a 0-60 mph of 8 seconds. Burns attributed exceptional performance to the Remy motor.

Remy has made over a motors of all sorts around the and they are bringing their to the electric drivetrain. It is exciting to see internal combustion companies and apply their expertise to drive applications. The Amp presenters omitted the price of their so I ll include it here: $50,000, than twice the price of a Chevy Equinox.

Next up, a BMW gave a short presentation for the E .  He briefed us on the specs for the highway EV with a 100 mile range, and go handling.   The Mini E is already leased to select drivers, and he they have extended the for another year, with 50% of the leasers renewing.  More he noted BMW s Project i.  Which catalyze more applications of drive trains in BMW vehicles, the 1 Series coupe.  They revealed the BMW ActiveE concept at the Detroit Auto Show.

The ActiveE will pack a 170 electric motor in a 1 Series, to it similar specs to the Mini E, but hope they give us trunk space.

Product Manager, Brian Arnett us the rundown on their plans for the i-MiEV .  Sounds like are pretty far along already in the with 1,400 cars to Japanese fleets.  The 80 mile highway capable EV will in Japan this month.  hopes to introduce the the i-MiEV to the US in 2011.

They are already creating with companies in the US, like Buy (Geek Squad cars), and Electric (for EV infrastructure).

Harmon represented Think America next.  The company to begin manufacturing the THINK in Elkhart, Ind. beginning in 2011.  The Think City have a range of 100 miles, and a top of 70 mph.

The two seater also has a cargo area in its recently rear.

Finally, Brady Vice President of Pep Stations, on their goal to supply with an electric vehicle infrastructure.  This is obviously said than done, but the is simple.  PEP (Plug-in Electric has designed a simple charging they hope to sell to rest centers, gyms, and else people park cars.

Patrons can park their cars, charge up in 1 to 5 hours, and away with a full

In summary, the EV press conference how the electric vehicle industry is making its way to the mainstream.  Cars the i-MiEV, Think City, and Leaf are practically designed, ample cargo space, and more than enough for 90% of Americans.  These cars be on our roads, in our showrooms, and charging in our within the next year.

The cars of two years ago are finally a reality, and I was thankful to see and drive at the 2010 New York Auto
