BMW’s new laser are more poweful than high-beam lights.

BMW will the first car maker offer laser headlamps on a series car when its new i8 goes on sale this year.

The new laser developed in partnership with lighting specialist Osram and set to an option on BMW’s new plug-in sportscar, are claimed to provide improved lighting intensity existing LED headlamps, which feature as standard on the i8, by offering a constant beam of light.

According to Thomas Hausmann, of exterior lighting development at the new laser headlamps operate at up to 344 lux in beam mode, as opposed to the to the LED headlamps which are rated at 180

By comparison, older Xenon turn out 120 lux, while halogen headlamps boast a 100 lux in high beam mode.

The light created by the new generation is emitted by laser diodes and a phosphor material. It is described as monochromatic, meaning the light possess the same length. leads to a greater luminance and particularly over longer

Hausmann says the monochromatic of the new laser headlamps enables to illuminate the road for a distance of up to 600 or up to double that of LED units. The stable properties of the light also enable more horizontal and vertical adjustment for functions such as anti-glare beam, in which the projectory of of light is automatically altered an on-coming car is detected.

During a preview of the new headlamps in this week, BMW admitted the intensity of the laser beam, can reach over 400 lux, has reduced slightly to decrease on reflective road signs.

As well as offering increased intensity for improved night vision, the new laser headlamps are claimed to be 30 per cent more efficient than the latest of LED headlamps, offering approximately 170 (a photometric unit of light per watt.

Following their as an option on the the i8, BMW’s laser are planned to filter down other regular BMW models, next year’s sixth-generation which will be previewed in car form at the Beijing motor in April.
