Review: BMW i3, My First Drive in an Car

After technology, cars always been my other  So you d think the electric car, at the junction of both my interests be nirvana for me, right?  Wrong.

As a petrol head, I ve always the impending (if elongated) death of the combustion engine.

But the reality of change and the finite nature of fuels means most accept the days of the IC engine are  So I ve steeled my nerve and gritted my to take my first test in an all electric car, the new BMW i3.

The Good, The Bad and The  — I ve always been a fan of BMW my review of one of my favourites here ) but to my the German marque s styling has increasingly questionable over years.  The images and I d seen of the quirky i3 hadn t to allay my fears either.  It s that BMW have gone for new and different for this carbon slice of the future but to me it often as a clumsy mix of lines, angles, and finishes.

The Bangle models famously controversial at launch, but may have been a little of their time and did grow on  So it s possible my opinion could on this EV design, unlikely as it may at this point.  The i8 s coming next summer is more pleasing to the eye but it s not the volume that BMW are hoping the i3 will be.

The news is that the car looks a bit in the flesh and the white model above that was in the showroom was  No doubt part of that came from those optional extra 20 wheels.

Hideous Recycled Door

The inside of the i3 is quirky (there s word again) and mixes familiar BMW controls with that aren t.  The driving position is pleasing and equipment across all models things like adaptive control, bluetooth, satnav, steering wheel, automatic lights and

The three trim levels the standard car are named the Loft , the and the Suite and that tells you about the thinking behind designs that feature leather and other natural  One thing that is in a supposedly premium car like though is the door card. to the salesman the interior door are manufactured from a recycled and if that makes you think of plastic park benches out of bottle caps then you re not far

It s a truly awful cold and unsightly material.

The rear doors integrate the car s B pillar and when both doors are create a large aperture for passengers access (the door cannot be opened the front opening first).  In the rear seats is a plastic of cup holders making the car firmly a 4  That seems a strangely decision for what s obviously a car.

There s a typical car sized boot plus a under the bonnet to stow electric charging cable.

The i3, in the of BMW, is rear-wheel-drive.  However the rear-mounted electric motor, and lack of front-to-rear drive means the familiar tunnel is giving the car more leg room in the as well as the ability to easily across from one seat to  As all RWD BMW owners know, you leave the car in the when it starts to snow.

friendly sales man told us the of the low-slung lithium-ion battery pack and skinny low resistance tyres the i3 much better in the white than usual, although we d to see that for ourselves.

The i3 is by no means pretty then, but it s to be a practical urban people rather than a sleek or sportscar.  And styling is subjective, so what s it like the wheel?

The Drive The car has keyless start, as as the key is in the cabin you can start the car. I say start.  Foot on brake, the Start/Stop button and the dash and nav come to life, but that s it.  No

Flick the chunky control at the 2 o position behind the steering to D for Drive, release the electric and move off. There s a sound bar a slight hum from the system.

There are two major that are immediately different the electric car driving experience. when you accelerate you suddenly that oft quoted fact electric cars have maximum torque available zero rpm.  The 170 184 ft lb motor and lightweight 1,270 kg fibre reinforced plastic construction all conspire to create a time of just 7.2 seconds. s performance more akin to a hot than the usual wheezy car.

Indeed it s similar to a Cooper S according to our BMW rep. Handling is too, benefitting from the low of gravity, care of the batteries mounted under the floor the car s wheel base.

You notice the big difference the first time you your foot off the accelerator  The car immediately starts to kinetic energy to replenish its and it s just like you ve started to  The car will actually its brake lights on during decelerations even though you ve not the left hand pedal.

Within a few minutes though, muscle memory takes and you start to ease off the throttle rather than lift off for the coast you ve come to expect your old-tech car.

We a mixed route of urban, and B road. At slow speeds the car has the silence you probably expect, but on the it sounds pretty similar to regular car.  It seems of the sound you hear on the motorway is and road noise rather that of your engine.

The optional extras mean the car can parallel park itself.  If you to do it yourself then the rear is superb. Bright with a wide angle lens guidelines to help you into space.

The car s tight turning is another fine city car

Satnav moves from a luxury option to a necessity this sort of car and thankfully BMW recognised that.  Every i3 with its own built-in SIM card and 3G connection and combined with the BMW Services will plot route and compare it to your range.  It will find you points if required and even if they are available or in use in real

Once you stop for a charge you can off to the coffee shop and check how miles are in your battery from your smartphone. can even make the car warm the or cool the cabin for your

Range — BMW say the i3 range is 80-100 using the regular Comfort mode.  In addition the Eco Pro and Eco Pro+ can extend the range to 118 miles by the cars performance as well as restricting things how cold the aircon goes or how the heated seats get.

For the ultimate range anxiety have come up with Access plan that provides the of swapping your i3 for a regular BMW vehicle if you re planning the occasional trip.  Like everything though, it has an associated cost £40 / month to qualify for one weeks use of a

The optional 32 Amp BMW i Wallbox Pure is fitted and lets you charge BMW i3 to around 80% in less than 3 With the car s iOS and Android smartphone App you can its 7 day timer to charge at off peaks where available. Without box at home you re looking at around 11 to fully charge from any regular 13 amp

It seems a little mean, but you to spend almost £600 to add the DC Charge preparation , an extra under the car s rear flap to it to take advantage of the fast (

30 to 80%) public chargers are starting to appear.

If you re really about range then the i3 Range Extender model a 650cc petrol engine by BMW s motorbike division (along more weight and a corresponding in performance).  Rather than the wheels it acts as a generator charges the cars batteries and can an additional 50-86 miles of range its 10 litre tank of fuel. can keep topping this up at a station for basically endless if you like.

Our salesman said half  of the i3 s sold from his so far have been the range model.  But at £3,000 you re only adding to the irony if you re an electric car to save money the train spotters amongst you can identify an i3 range extender as it has a flap at the front of the car for the fuel he also told us they had new customers in the showroom including people and environmentalists .

His dealership expects to sell 60 units in the next 12 months.

— There s no on-going monthly or lease charge for the i3 s battery, many other electric currently on the market.  BMW an 8 year/100,000 mile battery warranty that s leading next to alternatives the Nissan Leaf, Vauxhall and Renault Zoe.

BMW s usual extensive (and range of optional extras are all For example you can upgrade the standard 6 nav to a 10 version, but that alone add almost £1,000 to the price.  We got a for the basic trim car, the annual mileage to 10,000 and a slightly upgraded alloy heated seats and the parking and rear camera package. brought the Personal Lease to per month (with the same down) or an outright on the road price of £27,420.

That s the amount you d pay, the £5,000 subsidy has already been from the £32,420 full  To offset that, our sales guy that the savings we d make on (even with our already 1.2L car) and the free tax would be around £100 per  But how does this all up against something like the Golf Bluemotion that can 80mpg?

If you re a masochist you could try and through the mire that is BMW s and use the i3 builder to spec up your own EV.

To Buy or Not to Buy All in all my first experience of an electric car was more positive than I had  I certainly had some pre-conceptions these types of vehicles and some were upheld were not.

BMW are to be commended for their zero-emissions vehicle the ground up rather than an existing platform as so many manufacturers have done. another generation (or two?), improved styling and better then I can see a time when it become a very real for our second car.

As with the we need some buyers to in these 1st generation cars so the of us can take advantage of the progress to the models they will  For now it s unlikely anyone be able to give you an economic for buying one, more it will be a moral decision. I m often prepared to be that adopter with my technology for now I m going to leave the pioneering car buying to others.
