BMW s i3 may not be the best looking car around but it s nicer than most

Electric cars aren t cool, with the exception of the Tesla Roadster, they are boring to look at and offer a dull driving experience but can the i3 change that?

Electric cars aren’t cool. That’s a statement that was true until the introduction of the Tesla Roadster. A sleek and powerful sports car that proved electric power has its place with mainstream performance vehicles.

But the thing is, how many will be able to afford one? Very few, as it s as expensive as cars from Porsche and Ferrari.

Relatively affordable electric cars such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV aren’t what you would call good looking. The Nissan Leaf, though a very capable electric car, isn’t that good looking either. As such, electric cars are still considered vehicle for tree-huggers and no one else.

But that has changed somewhat with the introduction of vehicles like the BMW i3. It may not be as desirable as an i8, but the i3 is probably one of the better-looking conventional electric cars around. The compact dimensions will allow for easy maneuverability, the elegant silhouette as well as the blue accents of the exterior and interior provide it with a futuristic look.

The i3 has a 170bhp electric motor, which does give the car decent grunt. A 22kWh lithium-ion battery is tasked with powering the electric motor, when driven sensibly, the i3 can offer a range between 130 — 160km on a full charge. The problem with electric cars, and the main reason many don’t consider them practical is the fact that they take a long time to charge.

Some require 8 hours to reach 100 per cent but in the case of the i3, using a conventional home power outlet, it takes the battery pack just 3 hours to get from 0 to 100 per cent. By using a fast charger however, in 30 minutes, your battery pack is charged up to 100 per cent.

The range of the i3 is higher if it’s the range extender model. A tiny 647cc petrol engine acts like a generator and supplies power to the motor when the power of the battery pack dips below a certain level. This particular i3 can cover a distance of 240km to 300km, which is very impressive.

Unfortunately, it won’t be coming here anytime soon as our country lacks the infrastructure to properly support electric cars. But plans are underway to improve things; hopefully they are executed in a timely fashion.
