BMW, the German automaker has unveiled to the world its first mass produced electric car, the i3. The vehicle may have the usual kidney shaped grille like its traditional brothers and sisters but when it comes to what is underneath the hood, it has nothing to do with the previous generations.

The i3 s engine is made of a 170-horsepower electric motor powered by a lithium-ion, high-voltage battery that it can rely on to run a distance of 80 to 100 miles once charged. It is a 4 seater electric car that can be charged using the conventional power socket you use at home or via a BMW s special Wallbox charger that will play the role of a charging station when you are outside.

For those who may want to use the vehicle to travel long distances they may have to rely on an additional range-extender. It is an optional two-cylinder engine that depends on gas to run. It can be mounted next to the electric motor. With that in place one cannot claim to have a zero emission car but at least it extends the i3 range to about 186 miles.

As for speed you can hope to get up to 93 mph.

With a weight of around 2,634 pounds, the the hatchback-styled car is made of a carbon-fiber passenger cell and an aluminum chassis. It comes with an app that can be installed on either an iOS or Android device which it can be paired with so that the user will be able to check out information related to the battery condition, location, charge level and service messages.

European markets will be the first to sell the i3 which will be released in November. In Germany the i3 is going to cost 34,950 Euros. For those in the United States, Japan and China, they will have to wait until the middle of 2014 to get a chance to invest in that type of car.

It will be retailing for $41,350 and those who want it with the range-extender will have to pay $45,200 for that.

Now that BMW has made the move, depending on how the market responds, competitors like Audi and Mercedez-Benz may decide to join in and get their respective electric technologies to the market. The electric car market is growing and the i3 will have to make room for itself among competitors. It can t compare itself to a Tesla car but is has an appearance much more refined than Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt which are more affordable electric cars.

This first electric car will be a way for BMW to test the market. If it sells well, we can expect the company to release even an improved version. For now the automaker has unveiled concept design of the i8 which is expected to be a hybrid sport car.
