The Auto Shanghai 2009 started with a bang on Monday, as many automakers, both international and domestic brands, unveiled their new-energy vehicles with varied power motors.

These included electric vehicles (EV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and solar-powered cars. Many of these ‘green’ vehicles, have been a highlight of the show, sending us a message that the cars running on petrol will be out of date one day.

Developing new-energy vehicles should be one of the trends in the future’s auto industry, according to Qi Yumin, board chairman of Brilliance Auto. Their newest model, Zhonghua EV, is an electric car. But, unlike some industry counterparts who are eager to announce a deadline for new-style car marketing, Qi showed caution on the issue.

Brilliance will not follow the current new-energy vehicle tide, Qi said, We do attach importance to the new field, but will not plunge heavily into it in a short time. It will take a longer time before the new vehicles are marketed, and we should keep calm in new-energy vehicle’s RD and promotion.

Last month, China unveiled a revitalization plan for the domestic automobile industry, which outlines the details of enlarging new-energy auto production, and developing spare parts and components.

The plan said government or companies that purchase such cars are expected to get a compensation of 4,000 yuan to 25,000 yuan per car.

Encouraged by the attention paid to the new-energy auto development, domestic automakers showed great passion in the new field, and managed to bring their latest such models to the Auto Shanghai show one month later.

Making a few new models is easy, but what is really hard is producing reliable electric cars in batches. Among those showing off their productions, only a few have mastered the core technology. Some companies have just simply assembled the vehicle with key components from other manufacturers, like the battery, driving motor, and electric-control system, said an analysis in Economic Observer.

Unlike those automakers in fever of developing electric car, Brilliance has found another way out of the domestic auto market — go to Europe!

Last year, Brilliance exported 800 units to Germany, a small number but encouraging for a Chinese automaker. The company expects 6,000 units to Europe this year, with more countries targeted, like Spain, Italy, and France.

To expand the company’s market share in the European auto market, Brilliance has been improving the auto quality. ‘All the vehicles in our company are required to meet the European standard, such as the CO2 emission,’ Qi said, ‘this is where we differ from other domestic automakers.’

Besides, all Brilliance’s cars are jointly developed with foreign automakers, that boast long history in auto making and have advanced techniques, Qi said.

He also encourages domestic counterparts ‘not to be lazy’ and ‘not to be closed’. ‘Comprehensive cooperation with foreign automakers will help us master advanced techniques.’
