are different when you re 12. Especially you re really beginning to notice and other things. When I was a years old in early 1969, the Star Trek series was on, and we had not yet landed on the moon.

As a nation, we still recovering from the events of 1968, including the murders of Martin Luther and Bobby Kennedy.

And despite the bad we really had no idea how well we had it then. During the Summer, we got everywhere, had our meals taken of, paid no rent, and, oh had the swimming pool at our disposal. In the months, there was the game with pool table and box.

Plus all the milk and we could eat, brought to us by the Miss Thelma.

I guess I m a little The Wonder Years here, so lets move on to And the car I remember most from time was the one my best friend s brought home one night. a new 69 Buick Riviera.

Everything about this car was a act. From the outside, its paint and tan vinyl roof its clean yet modern lines elegant but simple. Its proportions perfect, save for just a extra overhang behind the wheels.

But that s the only criticism I have of this

The fastback profile more made up for that. This was a car you not wanted to ride in, it was one you wanted to be in. When Miss Trudy us kids up in this, we knew the fun had begun.

Inside the Riviera was it shined the most. Everything this car was deeply padded. the were pillowy soft. and to sink in several inches you poked them. The dash was soft and squishy. when the dictated padded dashboards on the years before, Buick that to heart and made a

Even the A-pillar trim and sun had an amazing plyability to them I have not seen matched in any car

The rear seating area, was where we munchkins rode of the time, was a parlor in itself. side had a power window set in, once again, deeply vinyl. There was a strip of just above the soft arm and between the rear passengers, on the was a chrome grille covering the car s speaker.

I did my best to find of the car I knew for this post. I we had our own pictures of the grand Riviera, but I can t taking any. Many of gold Rivieras had a black as in this ad image, but I thought the top the interior was a better way to go.

And though some people cringe at the thought of a gold or car. I think these best suit the 69 Riviera and now.

If memory serves, the car for about $6,500. Their also got a new Buick Electra 225 thereafter, and I believe it stickered at The Dad was a travel agent and real entreprenuer, and was obviously having a successful year.

For comparison, a 69 or Lincoln retailed for about — $7,500. And though the Electra was nothing short of a in itself, the Riviera was definitely my of their Buicks.

So the Riviera was GM did best at that time or at any they built a magnificent luxury car, and even it sporty looking. Not so much handling—it drove like any Buick of the time—but at least it had a youth appeal. Maybe it was an upscale Camaro that right at home at the country

The hidden headlights were we used to ask somebody to raise the then we d turn the brights on and them. We might even the horn as well. Typical eh?

The lights looked so cool in the off they resembled eyes up at you when you raised the hood and saw huge Buick V-8 staring back at you as well.

I think the had the 430 cu. in. (7.0 L) V-8 with 360 horsepower, but it may had the optional 455 cu in (7.5 L) V-8. I do that it drank gas. It did a 3-speed automatic, and was the first car cruise control and a tilting that I ever rode in.

I m they got the 1969 model and not the The changes just killed its it looked like a manniquin way too much cheap jewelry. The car was no fun, it was just tacky. Its front end was gone, replaced one grafted from a lowly Special .

The 70 model s skirted hind (open wheels were an made it resemble the Corvorado Live And Let Die, though movie was still four away. Sadly, the car s unique mix of and luxury was gone.

The gold 69 stayed in their family it was a derelict. It was passed down to the two and time and neglect took its A couple of minor crashes, time spent parked in a cow finally ended my time the Buick because one day it just

So now, when I see a classic and tan Buick Riviera, or even of one, it takes me back to I m a kid again, playing with window switches, tilting columns, cushy door and other marvels. I m sitting in an car, dreaming to drive magnificent machine some and engaging my imagination with and wonder.
