Deal of the Day

From those fabulous folks who brought you the $40 Rolex watch and melamine laced baby formula (and pet food ) it s the electric car! Monday morning BYD unveiled the F3DM, China s first mass produced electric sedan.

Acronym time! BYD, stands for Build Your Dreams. The DM in F3DM stands for dual mode, meaning electric and gasoline. BYD s F3DM will first sell in China for around $20,000USD.

The plan is to export it to the states in 2011.

Never heard of a car company named BYD? Until now they were mainly a battery company, producing rechargeables for cell phones and laptops. The LA Times quotes BYD founder and President Wang Chuanfu on this change in focus.

For a long time, China s auto technology was undeveloped, but our [electric car] technology marks the first time we re standing as a leader on the world stage.

At the moment there aren t too many pure electrics to choose from (though Top Gear did a nice review of the Tesla roadster ). The Chevy Volt is a 2010 dream if there s still a Chevy in 2010. Toyota promises an all electric about the same time. Other manufacturers are racing to design and build the car we all screamed for $2.50 a gallon ago. Will the world pay a premium if gasoline no longer commands a premium?

Talking green and spending your own green are two different things.

Public Radio s Marketplace sent its reporter Scott Tong to take a look.

Well, the car doesn t look spectacular around the outside, I have to tell you. They unveiled it and it looks like a Corolla. But the magic is on the inside. This car has a plug-in battery that is said to be two years ahead of the competition, because it s on the mass market here.

And it s superior to what the Japanese and to what GM are developing now. It goes longer, farther per charge, and it charges up faster than the competition s.

No matter what you think of this concept and car there is one additional fact that lends instant credibility Warren Buffett s on-board. Buffett, commonly thought of as a shrewdly bulletproof investor, has thrown a quarter billion dollars into BYD. Even for Warren that s significant cash.

China Daily found Lian Yubo, vice-president and chief engineer of BYD.

The Fe battery, which is highly safe and cheap, could support a range of 100 km for each charge of electricity, compared with 25 km of the industrial competitors.

The new car s total range could reach 500 km per charge of gasoline and electricity, which could facilitate the users to travel short distance powered by electricity and long distance powered by gasoline, he added.

Besides special charging stations, which could charge the car to 50 percent in 10 minutes, F3DM could also be charged with electricity outlets. It takes about nine hours to charge the car to full level.

OK, this is a manufacturer of laptop batteries. Think of the claimed specs on your laptop s battery and apply that same fudge factor to the BYD. Still, for around twenty grand this could be a game changer.

Will this Chinese car be sold at Wal*Mart or on New York City s Canal Street (it s where I got the $40 Rolex)? Probably not. Bringing a car to the United States is one thing.

Passing the safety tests (it would seem the emissions tests shouldn t be a problem) then setting up a network of dealers is another challenge especially if your expertise is selling batteries to other manufacturers.
