Electric Car Range of the Top Models

The electric car battery range can be a big factor in your decision to select and buy an electric car. Having a higher electric range on the car basically means that you can travel farther before 1) requiring a charge or 2) using additional fuel. Some of these cars are built for lower ranges while others are built to attain higher ranges.

Best Electric Cars for 2013

The main factor that dictates range is the type of hybrid system utilized in the car. Plug-in electric only cars have lower ranges, because they rely on battery capacity only. Hybrid cars have higher ranges because they utilize both electric and conventional gasoline-powered engines, and do not require extended periods of re-charging time.

Chevrolet Volt . The Chevrolet Volt is one of the newest electric cars to hit the market. Initial estimates given by GM state that the Volt will get around 230 miles per gallon. The car maintains excellent fuel efficiency and has an electric battery range of 40 miles.

It is a small number compared to some of the cars that will be mentioned later, but the reasons are justifiable. The Volt is for the average individual who commutes to and from work every day. Seventy-five percent of people in the United States commute less than 40 miles per day.

For that group of people, the Volt makes sense.

Tesla Roadster . The Tesla Roadster has helped open minds and doors to the electric car market. The Tesla Roadster is priced at around $100,000 and competes with offerings from prestigious brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche. The Roadster can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. It can reach a top speed of 125 miles per hour, which is something that electric cars have long been unable to do.

The electric range for the Roadster is 250 miles, while rumors are that it can travel 300 miles between charges. The Tesla Roadster does not sacrifice performance for efficiency, giving its owner the best of both worlds.

Tesla Model S : The Tesla Model S is a more affordable version of the Roadster above, costing around $60,000. The Model S can compete with Germany’s best, which includes the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. The exact battery range has not been released jusdt yet, but it is believed to be over 300 miles.

BYD: BYD is a company that has been marketing and selling its cars primarily in China. Its E6 model is a plug-in electric model that relies purely on electricity. The battery range on this model is 250 miles.

Fisker Karma . The Fisker Karma is the other high-end car that can compete with Tesla Roadster. The Fisker Karma costs around $90,000. There are plans for a sedan model that will be less expensive, but for now a 2-door coupe is the option.

The Karma gets 150 miles per gallon, while its range is a little over 200 miles.

Toyota Prius . You can now convert the popular Toyota Prius into a plug-in hybrid which relies exclusively on electric power. However, it has a fairly weak 5 kWh battery that only has enough capacity to give the Prius 20 miles of range. However, it should be noted that the conversion maintains the combustion engine, helping it to achieve over 50 miles per gallon.

Overall, there are many choices available for electric cars, but if you truly want a car that runs almost entirely on electricity, you will be looking at some of the more expensive models.
