The e6 electric crossover from China’s BYD will arrive in the US’ fleets in 2013

We all know how frightened the world was when they head the Chinese will be making cars. Everyone panicked, fearing that the world market will be invaded by cheap and unreliable cars. Meanwhile, all that proved to be nothing short of mumbo-jumbo talk, something akin to conspiracy theories. Those fears and worries concerned both combustion engine and electric powered cars.

While in the former case everything is mostly paranoid speculation, the latter might actually hold some truth; a small quantity of it anyway.

The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD has been trying to get its e6 electric crossover in the US for some time now, and it seems that goal is nearing completion. The matter has faded away from public discussion, but tests have been carried out with the Los Angeles Housing Authority on a fleet wide level. At the same time, BYD is hoping for its car to get certified and finally be able to sell it in the US.

Appealing to fleets is the first step the Chinese are taking on the path on introducing the e6 to Americans. According to The New York Times, 2013 is expected to be the year the crossover will go on sale. The first targeted customers will be rental-car companies.

At this moment, the e6 is only available in Shenzhen, China, where it is undergoing filed tests in order to understand how they operate in real life conditions. Jack Hidary of Hertz is the one offering the cars for rental in Shenzhen. Also, the president of BYD America, Michael Austin, says that that rental program will expand shortly.

Besides being open for rental, the e6 can be bought in Shenzhen for the price of 58,000 dollars. 19,000 dollars in incentives are offered when you buy this car. Of course, when the car comes to the States it will cost less, if it wants to see individual buyers even looking at it.

Now, as already mentioned, by 2013 all the procedures needed to certify the car for US roads will be over, and fleets like Hertz will be able to order. The car will be available for individuals when the charging infrastructure will grow a bit; anyone can testify that charging stations would better be felt more often.

Lastly, we shall look at the history of this crossover. The was supposed to be ready back in 2010, but that date was postponed for 2011, and yet again a delay happened and 2012 was set as the release date. This series of delays is something common in this field.

The Chinese were not the only ones to confront themselves with this problem.

A quick look at Fisker and Tesla will prove that bringing an EV to life is not a simple and easy process. Also, the e6 has already gotten a revision, but we can’t arrive at a clear conclusion seeing that very few had the chance to drive it.

Anyway, we will have to wait a bit before the car comes to the Us, but we wish it a pleasant journey.
