Used Car: 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Review

The 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid uses less fuel than a number of 2010 large SUVs, and is still a capable SUV. However, in a competitive class, its performance and interior are overshadowed by rivals.

The 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is ranked:

When it was new, reviewers liked that the Escalade Hybrid offered superior gas mileage to its competitors. However, they also noted that the Escalade Hybrid’s fuel economy probably wouldn’t satisfy most hybrid SUV shoppers. It also carries a reliability rating that is below average for the class.

A 6.0-liter V8 and a pair of electric motors sit under the Escalade Hybrid’s hood. Reviewers said power was more than adequate, though some noted that the regenerative brakes were a bit touchy. Variants with rear-wheel drive achieve 21/22 mpg city/highway. Four-wheel drive is available. Maximum towing capacity is 5,800 pounds, which is fairly low for the class, but far better than most other hybrid SUVs.

Cargo capacity is a respectable 108.9 cubic feet with the rear seats stowed, but reviewers disliked the Escalade Hybrid’s third-row seat, which must be removed in order to maximize cargo space. With the third row in place and a middle-row bench seat, the Escalade Hybrid can seat up to eight people.

Inside, reviewers were pleased that the Escalade Hybrid’s luxury trappings didn’t stray from those of the gas-only version. Though the third row was called out for feeling cramped, reviewers found the first two rows to be plenty comfortable. Standard equipment includes a power sunroof, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, tri-zone climate control, navigation, Bluetooth and a Bose stereo.

Upgrading to the Platinum trim adds power-retractable running boards, an adjustable suspension and more luxurious features.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like the Escalade Hybrid’s fuel economy but don’t care much about the Cadillac badge, check out the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. The two use the same hybrid powertrain, so the Tahoe Hybrid gets similar fuel economy and handles about the same. It may not be as luxurious as the Escalade Hybrid, but it also comes standard with leather upholstery and plenty of luxury features.

Another alternative to consider is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL. When equipped with a diesel engine, the GL gets great fuel economy for a large SUV, although it’s still not as good as the Escalade Hybrid. While the base GL doesn’t come with as many standard features, it has a slightly better reliability score.

Additionally, reviewers liked the GL’s high-quality interior and comfortable ride when it was new.
