Chevrolet Volt Keeps Winning Car of the Year Awards

by Chevrolet in the News on January 14, 2011

Score it a big-time triple play: The 2011 Chevrolet Volt took home not one, not two, but three separate “Car of the Year” honors earlier this month, with Chevy’s fresh new fuel saver winning recognition from Motor Trend . AUTOMOBILE Magazine and Green Car Journal .

The editors at MT called the Volt a “car of the future you can drive today, and every day,” going on to say “We expected a science experiment, but this is a moon shot. The Volt delivers on the promise of the vehicle concept as originally outlined by GM, combining the smooth, silent, efficient, low-emissions capability of an electric motor with the range and flexibility of an internal combustion engine. It is a fully functional, no-compromise compact automobile that offers consumers real benefits in terms of lower running costs.”

According to Sterling Chevrolet. the Volt offers up to 50 miles of all-electric, emissions free driving, courtesy of its advanced lithium-ion battery pack, and then, if the batteries are depleted, the car’s efficient gasoline-powered generator kicks in to deliver up to 300 more miles of driving range. But as detailed in the January issue of Motor Trend . the Volt offers much more than just a fuel-efficient driving experience:

In terms of exterior design, the front of the Volt is “outstanding—strong, confident and tastefully upscale.”

The interior boasts “impressive high-resolution-and highly interactive-instrument and center stack LCD screens.”

From a performance perspective, “The Volt chassis is nimble and responsive, and the low-rolling-resistance tires deliver better than average grip for this type of rubber,” while “acceleration (0-60 mph in 8.8 seconds in pure EV mode, and 8.7 in combined gas/electric mode) is competitive with conventional compacts, and more than adequate for safely merging onto fast-moving freeways.”

Of course, that being said, Motor Trend also was quite impressed with the Volt’s real-world fuel efficiency. In a multi-day test designed to replicate normal driving conditions, and during which the car was recharged overnight, MT editors covered 299 miles while achieving the equivalent of 72.9 mpg. Further, “our testing suggests that even if drivers regularly went 80 miles between charges, the Volt is significantly cheaper to run than regular hybrids.”

Adding to the Volt’s trophy case, the team at AUTOMOBILE Magazine said the Volt “is the most sophisticated, most important vehicle on the road today. It won’t just change what we drive, but also how we drive. Owners will plug in at night, heat or cool their cabin before they leave the garage, and adopt new driving styles to maximize their electric range. Then, when the battery is depleted, they’ll mindlessly motor on; free of the limitations that accompany pure electric vehicles.”

Then the editors of Green Car Journal weighed in, and again voters tipped the scales in favor of the Volt: “The electric vehicles that were test marketed in the 1990s tantalized us, but were without a solid business case. What a difference a decade makes. Now, Chevrolet has stepped up with an all-encompassing package in its Volt extended range electric car—a car deserving of the title 2011 Green Car of the Year.”

The award-winning 2011 Chevrolet Volt goes on sale in select markets later in 2010 and will roll out to the rest of the country, including Chevrolet Minneapolis dealers, beginning next year.
