2013 Chevrolet Volt Overview

Representing the immediate future of motoring, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt combines the benefits of an electric car with the freedom of a traditional gas car that eliminates range anxiety.

The Volt debuted a couple years ago along with the Nissan Leaf and the pair formed the first mass market electric vehicles to come to the United States. However, while the Leaf is a pure electric car, the Volt features both an electric motor and a traditional gas engine. The Volt’s electric motor pairs with a large lithium-ion battery to provide up to 38 miles of emissions free driving on a full charge. When the juice runs out, the gas engine kicks in, actually working as a generator to recharge the battery instead of driving the wheels.

All told, the 2013 Volt has a range of 380 miles, more than four times that of the Leaf, and when the gas runs out you simply stop at a station and fill up.

From the outside the Volt has a futuristic appearance with its liberal use of shiny piano black trim under the windows and on top of the trunk. The gas tank is filled from a normal gas cap found on the rear passenger’s side, while the battery is charged via a port on the front driver’s side. 17-inch aluminum wheels, LED daytime running lights, and powered/heated side mirrors are standard.

Under the hood, the electric motor is powered by a 350-volt, 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and produces 149-horspeower and 273 pounds-feet of torque. The gasoline motor is a 1.4-liter four-cylinder that requires premium gasoline. Recharge times for the battery vary.

Recharging the volt through a 120-volt household plug takes 10-12 hours, while with a 240-volt charging station (sold separately) it can be charged in only four hours. The Volt can also be scheduled to charge at off-peak hours which shaves money off the electric bill.

Inside, the Volt seats up to four passengers (the Volt’s T-shaped battery pack runs down the middle of the rear seat where a middle seat would go) and has 10.6 cubic feet of cargo volume. Styling is futuristic, with a large LCD where the instrument panel would normally be and touch-sensitive center console controls instead of knobs and buttons. The Volt doesn’t skimp when it comes to standard features, offering automatic air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, Chevy’s MyLink multimedia system, and a USB/iPod port.

Leather upholstery, a navigation system, heated front seats, and Bose premium speakers are optional.

When it comes to safety, the Volt performs admirably winning both a full five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS for its performance in crash tests. Standard safety features include knee, side-impact, and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and OnStar.

The 2013 Chevrolet Volt serves as a bridge between the gas-only car and the electric car, offering the best of both worlds.
