Chrysler Aims to Broaden Electric Vehicle Options

While those who have been shopping for a plug-in electric car have been inundated with information and publicity from Chevrolet . and even smaller boutique automakers such as Tesla and Fisker . until recently there has been very little information forthcoming from the other struggling domestic car company currently living day to day on government assistance. Although Chrysler has offered a slew of interesting battery-powered prototypes on the show circuit over the past few years, these automobiles were rarely accompanied by any definite production plans.

This has recently changed, thanks to a media blitz from Chrysler regarding their environmentally-friendly vehicle initiatives. Their ENVI program has been fully detailed on a special website. which specifically mentions 5 vehicles slated for production in 2010. At the same time, a fresh round of prototypes have hit auto shows around the world.

Leading the way in terms of driving excitement is the Dodge Circuit EV . a vehicle which resembles a cross between the Dodge Viper and the Mitsubishi Eclipse . Designed with speed and handling in mind, this zero-emissions pure electric vehicle claims a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of under 5 seconds, along with top speed of at least 120 miles per hour. On top of all of this impressive performance is an equally attractive range — the Circuit EV can travel up to 200 miles on a single charge, dependent upon driving style.

Of course, the Chrysler program also includes some tamer options intended to appeal to a more practical-minded segment of the market. Daily drivers will be tempted by EV versions of the Jeep Patriot and Wrangler Unlimited . which offer a combination of electric and gasoline power. This includes 40 miles of battery-only operation and a full range of 400 miles.

An EV version of the Chrysler Town Country features the same specifications. Each of these vehicles is intended to offer the same functionality as their current internal combustion equivalents in terms of comfort, driving experience and passenger accommodations. A smaller sedan dubbed the Chrysler 200C EV will also share this new platform, but wraps it up in a flashier, aerodynamic body style.

For most electric car buyers, the main question has become whether Chrysler has the financial wherewithal to remain in existence long enough to actually produce this interesting electric lineup for the 2010 model year. If the company remains viable and can convince their potential corporate parent Fiat to continue to invest in their EV program, then they may be able to provide an excellent cross-shopping opportunity for buyers who feel restricted by the current electric options.

The answer to Chrysler’s money woes is likely to be decided within the very near future, which should at least clarify the immediate state of the plug-in hybrid market. Chrysler does appear to have a much wider and more practical lineup of electric vehicles waiting in the wings, which might not bode well for struggling GM and their so far lone Chevrolet Volt competitor.
