Subject A message from Bob Nardelli on electric vehicles

Dear Colleagues,

I have some very exciting news to share with you. Today, Chrysler will show our customers, our dealers and the media three new production-intent, ad vanced electric-drive vehicles developed by our in-house unit, ENVI (derived from the word “environment”). We also will announce production timing for one of these vehicles for North America and European markets, and that we will place approximately 100 electric-drive vehicles on the road in government, business, utility and Chrysler development fleets in 2009.

More detailed information, photos and video will be available throughout the day.

This is a huge step forward for Chrysler, our industry and our country. We are staking out a leadership role in “green” vehicles, consistent with our heritage of innovation, our tradition of great engineering and our history of taking bold decisions. Today’s news also demonstrates our commitment to deliver environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient vehicles to consumers –- and to meet this social responsibility faster and more broadly than any other manufacturer.

ENVI’s work in developing these prototypes is a perfect example of how we are using our speed and agility –- as an independent, privately owned company -– to respond fast to our customers and to market opportunities.

In addition to our ENVI vehicles, today we are taking the wraps off the next generation, zero-emissions GEM vehicle — the 2009 GEM Peapod. This dramatically redesigned and upgraded model will broaden the market for GEM neighborhood electric vehicles.

We’re not ready to announce what our first electric vehicle production model will be, but we are developing a full portfolio of electric vehicles and range-extended electric vehicles for production. This technology will be applied to front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and body-on-frame four-wheel-drive platforms over the next several years.

Our all-electric technology provides customers with a vehicle that has zero tailpipe emissions and a 150- to 200-mile driving range — far exceeding most daily commutes. The ENVI range-extended electric vehicle technology adds a small gasoline engine and electric generator that enables it to travel 40 miles on all-electric power and boasts a range of 400 miles on approximately eight gallons of gasoline.

Also as part of our electric-drive development efforts, we have joined with General Electric to pursue a project with the U.S. Department of Energy to explore advanced energy-storage technology. Our goal is to make battery packs smaller and significantly less expensive than current designs.

We can all take pride in the progress that has been made in the development of these landmark new vehicles. Today’s announcement will no doubt shock those industry observers who want to count us out. Let’s continue to show the world that we can achieve great things when we bring our gre at talent and passion together to serve our customers.
