Toyota unveils new Aygo city car at Geneva motor show

If you thought the Toyota Yaris was the smallest hatch you could buy from this Japanese manufacturer. then you were correct. The Yaris is about as small as it gets on our shores. But in Europe and other markets, Toyota also offers the pint-sized Aygo, which is built in the Czech Republic alongside its Citroлn C1 and Peugeot 108 siblings.

Known as Project B-Zero, the three cars are essentially identical underneath the three distinct wrappers, and all three have been in production at the same plant since 2005. We don’t mean to alarm you or make you feel old, but 2005 was a whole nine years ago, a fact which Toyota and its French partners were apprised of just recently. And so Toyota brought the redesigned second-generation Aygo to the Geneva motor show this week.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: that is indeed a giant X on the car’s face, a feature not present on the model it replaces. The twin bandoliers cover a hood hiding a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine pumping out 68-hp and 70 lb-ft of torque, which will be paired with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed X-Shift automated manual. Coupled with a manual transmission, the Aygo will reportedly return a combined 57.3 mpg, and will be capable of a 14.2 jog to 62 mph.

When coupled with an automated manual transmission, the Aygo will return 56 mpg, though the trip to 62 mph will grow, perhaps imperceptibly, to 15.5 seconds. We can’t help but think that a clever automatic with a whole gang of cogs might enable the Aygo to improve its sprinting ability, but the Aygo does not appear to live in a segment where sophisticated fuel-conserving automatics hang out.

With a length of just 136 inches, the Aygo is city car first and everything else second, though in five-door guise, it will give equal priority to passenger convenience and cargo space once the back seats are folded down. Despite its size, the Aygo won’t skimp on entertainment and will be available with Toyota’s new x-touch multimedia system, which will offer navigation, sound, and even social media apps, in addition to basic features like a backup camera.

The interior is pretty basic, as in the outgoing model.

As with the first generation of the Toyota /Peugeot /Citroлn trio, we have a feeling that much of the discussion in the media about the three new cars will revolve around deciding which one is the runt of the litter.

As much as we’d like to stage a series of soccer matches between three teams of B-Zero cars (the only proper way to settle the issue, for the record), we’ll nevertheless point out that its Peugeot and Citroлn siblings will be available with 1.2-liter four-cylinder engines and will be marketed as lifestyle vehicles, complete with canvas tops and various whimsical paint schemes and stickers. The Aygo is meant to be fun and cheap, and will be marketed to young people, as the TV commercial above demonstrates.
