Citroen DS5 Review

Stylish inside and out; very comfortable driving; economical to run.

Cramped rear passenger space; poor rear visibility; unforgiving suspension.

The Citroen DS5 is a good looking and stylish addition to the line-up of hatchbacks and has several unique touches, setting it apart from its rivals. It is economical to run especially the hybrid model and exceptionally comfortable for the driver and front passenger, although less so for rear seat passengers. For buyers who want a classy, reliable car, the Citroen DS5 is well worth looking at, but it will be of limited interest to anyone regularly carrying tall people in the back!

There is a choice of four engines on offer one petrol, two diesels and a diesel/electric hybrid, giving a range of Citroen DS5 performance options. The only petrol available is a 1.6 litre, 200 bhp engine which, combined with the 6-speed manual gearbox, can sprint from 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds. The diesels kick off with the 1.6 e-HDi 115 which will reach 62 mph in 12 seconds; this is fitted with a six-speed clutchless EGS automatic gearbox. Fans of a diesel engine could alternatively opt for the 2.0 litre HDi, available with either a manual or automatic gearbox.

With the manual gearbox this can move from 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds and, with the automatic gearbox, in a slightly more leisurely 9.8 seconds. Last, but by no means least, Citroen give you the option of a diesel/electric hybrid DS5 model. Although this carries less storage space, it offers an almost silent journey, great fuel economy, 200 bhp, 0-62mph acceleration of 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 131 mph.

The driver and front seat passenger of a Citroen DS5 will ride in great comfort in well-supported seats and there will be few complaints. It s not so great in the back though, and you would need to be quite short not to feel a little cramped, particularly on lengthy journeys. The DS5 s suspension is not the most forgiving and is only compensated for by the exceptionally comfortable seats. The car has good grip and corners well, but it does feel heavy to drive this is especially the case in the Hybrid model, which has the extra weight of the electric battery to deal with.

The Citroen DS5 suffers little from engine, wind and road noise, and the Hybrid is almost silent. This is a good car for town and motorway driving; but don t head off from one end of the country to the other with too many six footers in the back!

Exceptionally good looking for a hatchback, the Citroen DS5 has some unique features. The rear window is very narrow, and the chrome trim on the bonnet is a very stylish addition. The Citroen DS5 is distinctive and attractive, and a car that the image-conscious driver is likely to enjoy being seen in!

High quality materials and stylish finishes are the hallmark of the Citroen DS5. There are no hidden nasties soft plastics, mood lighting and flock linings all give the impression that a great deal of thought has gone into every square inch of the interior. The DS5 s dash is laid out attractively and logically and is generally user-friendly. The driver s comfort is well catered for, with a steering wheel and seat adjustment range to suit every shape and size. Rear seat passengers might find life a little less comfy though headroom is slightly restricted and compromised by the headlining mounted switches and the panoramic sunroof, and there s very little opportunity for stretching any but the shortest legs.

The Citroen DS5 offers 465 litres of boot capacity, although the Hybrid model loses 143 litres of this in favour of its electric battery. The rear seat does split and fold, so some space can be regained if needs be.

The Citroen DS5 comes in three trims starting with the entry level DSign and progressing through DStyle and DSport, and all come with a generous amount of equipment. The DSign s equipment list includes cruise control, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, front and rear electric windows, front fog lights with cornering function, anti-theft alarm, automatic electric parking brake, leather steering wheel, keyless entry and start, Bluetooth and USB socket. Spend a little more on the DStyle and you will also get a cockpit roof with toggle switches and a three-part roof with electric sunblinds; leather and cloth upholstery; and colour satellite navigation while the top of the range Dsport has a driver s seat with lumbar support and a massage function, front electric and heated sports seats, xenon dual-function multi-directional headlamps with washer jets, front parking sensors and colour heads-up display.

Unsurprisingly, the Citroen DS5 is the proud possessor of five Euro NCAP stars. For starters it is fitted with six airbags as standard; and the Citroen eTouch system, enabling an emergency call to be made at a single press of a button, is an ingenious touch. The car feels solid and secure, and Citroen have made great progress in their reliability ratings.

Buying Owning

Only the petrol version of the Citroen DS5 could be considered expensive to run; all the diesels deliver good fuel economy and low emissions. The star of the show is the Hybrid though, with emissions at 99g/km CO2 and offering 74.4 mpg, this model is definitely worth considering for anyone looking for an economic drive. The downside of this one, however, is that it is the most expensive to buy, and even low running costs may not make up for the extra outlay.
