CITROEN C-Zero Electric Cars

Review: Citroen C1 ev ie

The Toyota which is the (in-all-but-styling) identical of the Citroen C1, is a fine little and when I tested it in 2007. I most everything about it Packaging, finish, styling, pleasure of driving: the Aygo/C1 out to be a thoroughly modern and enjoyable car for a price.

Only the ride me as a bit harsh. I certainly didn t about the revvy, pleasant-sounding and engine either, so you might be to hear that I like the version of the C1 just as well. Or, qualifications, even more.

the heck do I mean? Please with me, and I ll tell you.

The based Electric Car Company was founded by a guy who made his fortune electronic traffic management Intrigued with the idea of a car, he tried some and thought he could easily do a lot better. The ev ie. thus, does not like something some in a garage screw together in spare evenings. What ECC is buy C1s, remove the engine and gas and add batteries, motor, heater, and an system.

Open the hood and you see batteries and electronic gizmos mostly by plastic casing. It looks and assembly-line standard, and not at all improvised. A set of Lithium batteries is where the gas used to be. The trunk, in contrast to the E-Twingo. is undiminished.

So the ev ie is what the C1 is what the Aygo is what the 107 is: a lightweight, almost Smart-short car can transport four and a tiny bit of (Don t get me wrong: this is no but it certainly beats an original VW for space. And the room in front is adequate in all dimensions unless you re a

Incidentally, the ev ie s interior has optional highlights I have never on a C1 outside of the U.K. I don t like it, but may just be a German complaining British taste.

So what s it to drive? Well, you buckle up, the key, watch the battery lights (where the tachometer is on C1s) fire up, and put the car in forward (there s also a neutral and gear, but no clutch). When you the hand brake and press on the gas you hear a soft zingy sound well-known to those who on streetcars or high-speed trains. As you moving, the zingy sound and then nothing.

Basically no motor sound at It s eerie and somewhat different other EVs I have driven.

I the ev ie through London in Kensington and and with the help of ECC s Richard who knows where traffic are located, was able to take it up to speed. Here s my verdict. Not but acceptable acceleration, and zero overall very pleasant.

Don t the zero drama thing. minutes, you stop missing the the non-linear acceleration, the various levels, of internal-combustion driving. You do from a kind of disorientation a while, not quite knowing how you re going, which in combination left-hand-side driving (I don t often in the U.K), forced me to concentrate. But the effect is relaxing.

No wonder: a linear speed-to-noise is something we know from all of propulsion, except airflight and ICE

As in the stock C1, the steering is fine, the right level of directness and If I had to qualify a difference, I d say the ev ie feels solid. The regenerative braking which charges the batteries you lift off the gas pedal or brake, is and capable.

So all is well on the electric Not quite. With a top speed of 60 mph and a distinct wheeziness on higher-speed this is no more than an car.

The electric-utility boss in I wrote about. he d be less satisfied with 41HP 890KG, which is a power-to-weight of a 1960s Beetle. (You do all the torque the motor can muster – ft from standstill, though). And the is only 60 miles, so forget with ev ie.

But nevertheless: it s the only good-to-drive, affordable, crashworthy, car on the market today. Which is saying something! But does it any financial sense at all? cars are famously expensive.

Well, prime your nerd and allow me to do the data please.

The ev ie costs about which is a whopping £8,000 than a stock C1. A utility 90 pence for around 60 miles of electricity. Assuming a yearly of 10,000 miles per year on 50 miles/day and 200 commuting days, the ev ie thus require electricity around £144 per year.

costs, in contrast, would to £1,144, if one assumed a cost of per liter and a fuel consumption of (equivalent to 36.2 MPG US). The according to this calculation, be one thousand Pounds ($1,645) per At current prices, therefore, a would need over years to amortize the cost of the ev ie in to a stock C1.

Even at these European fuel price Bummer!

But wait. In the U.K. an car costs less in insurance, and in road tax too. Both can add up to £200 per year. But that s the beginning.

In London, and soon in many U.K. towns, there is a charge for gasoline cars – but for electrics. Which saves you based on a commute to London 200 a year. And parking, depending on community you stay in, is much for an EV.

In Westminster, for example, it s £200 per for the ev ie, as opposed to £4,000 for a normal Not enough? The U.K government plans a £5k incentive for electric cars in 2011. But even at the present incentives in an electric- friendly like the U.K easily add up to a cost of £2k to £7k per year, so you can recoup the cost of car within 2-3 years.

At which it becomes almost compelling, without thinking about warming, emissions, terrorists and oil despots, or rising fuel Or without looking at the trend that petroleum-based transport is to become more expensive by year, while the cost of is set to sink.

Of course, the ev ie only makes because the U.K. government has that the negative externalities “costs to society”) of electric are much lower than of a petroleum-engined one, and has changed its regime accordingly. Other are following suit, like it or

Bottom line: the first electric car is a Citroen that fellows in Hertfordshire convert to a proposition, to a pleasant and safely-driving in 24 man-hours. This sure isn t a car for its range and speed limitations it excels as a commuter but not as anything But it does throws mud in the face of of the major car makers.
