(2003 — )

The Daihatsu Copen is produced since 2003.

This car comes with a choice of two engines. A 0.7-liter petrol do not seems much, but thanks to a high-pressure turbocharger it develops 64 hp and ensures spirited performance for a car this light. In 2005 a more powerful 1.3-liter twin cam petrol was introduced.

It hasn’t got a turbocharger, but still develops a respectable 87 hp.

Handling of the Daihatsu Copen significantly differs whether the roof is up or down. Handling is neat and tidy with the roof up. It has a precise steering and minimal body roll.

When the roof is down picture changes dramatically — it looses most of the body rigidity and most of the lumps and bumps transfer shakes into the cabin.

With the roof in place occupants are well isolated from the outside noises, but when it is folded things change dramatically. On the faster roads occupants will need to shout to make themselves heard, while the wind noise becomes extremely tiring on longer journeys. On the good side there is a happy revving engine emitting a pleasant exhaust note.

The Daihatsu Copen is the cheapest hard top convertible on the market. It’s running costs are low thanks to a small fuel consumption. There is a strong demand for this little cabriolet that keeps resale values high.

Furthermore Daihatsu has a fine reputation for reliable and tough cars and the Copen shouldn’t be an exception.

Inside the cabin there is a built-to-last feel. Most of materials are durable, but excessive body shake with the roof down may effect on panel fit. A three-spoke steering wheel and aluminum roll-over bars give this small car a sporting feel.

There is no driver’s seat-height adjustment, while the steering wheel has only a minimum amount of height travel. Despite that most drivers should find a comfortable driving position in the low-slung seat.

On the standard safety list there are twin front airbags and anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. An alarm is optional, but the steel roof is more thieve-proof than a soft-top would be.

The Daihatsu Copen is well equipped for it’s price. Standard features include an air conditioning, electric windows and door mirrors, alloy wheels and some other goodies. However the most impressive feature of this small car is it’s electric folding roof.

Production of Daihatsu Copen sill continues.

Advantages: Tiny engine has a big heart and delivers surprisingly zippy performance. Draws a crowd thanks to cheeky styling and electric folding steel roof.

Disadvantages: Struggles at higher speeds and becomes noisy at the motorway. Cabin will not suit taller drivers.

Verdict: Stylish looks and quality in a compact package.
