The Daihatsu Sirion is a compact five door hatchback and is considered to be a town car. Buy a car like this and you ll have a perfect little run-about. It has an attractive package which is decidedly main-stream in its design taking lots of character and visual cues from Daihatsu s sister company Toyota and their Yaris hatchback offering.

At just 3.63 metres long and 1.66 metres wide the Sirion has a dainty little footprint. However, what sets is apart from other cars for sale it this sector, is its height. Coming in at 1.54 metres, the extra height equates to a super comfortable ride for all passengers with maximum space utilized. The Sirion carries it slightly top-heavy proportions well, thanks to its snub nose, flared wheel arches and upright flat hatchback design. Now in its third-generation the new Sirion s front and rear bumper is made from polypropylene with memory applications.

The result is the bumper can handle collisions of up to 15 km/h and it will revert back its original form without chipping or needing repair. Additionally, all four doors of the Sirion open to nearly 80 degrees which makes entry and exit as easy as possible.

Inside the new Sirion has been upgraded in terms of new upholstery options and interior features. There is plenty of storage space in the front with two passenger cup holders, dual cubby hole as well as side door pockets. By moving the wheels of the car out to the corners, the wheelbase is long compared with the body of the car. This has improved handling significantly and the amount of interior space available.

The rear seats fold forward flat providing a smooth surface to slide objects into. There is a 60:40 rear split of the seating allowing either or both sides of the rear seat to be folded forwarded. The boot opens to a total height of 1910 mm which a grown man comfortably fits under.

Other specifications include: Radio and CD player, a height adjustable steering wheel, electric windows all round, electrically operated side mirrors and windscreen wipers that have an intermittent function.

The entry-level 1.3 Standard Daihatsu Sirion s 4 cylinder 12 valve DVVT engine produces 67 kW of power and 120 Nm of maximum torque. Bigger brother, the Daihatsu Sirion 1.5 Sport has moved up a league or two with a powerful boost from a 1.5 litre four cylinder 16 valve electronic fuel injection engine capable of producing 76 kW at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 132 Nm in the manual and 138 Nm in the automatic variant. Daihatsu claims fuel consumption of just 5.8 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 132 grams CO2 per km (these figures are for the 1.3 Manual).

A number of advanced safety features puts the Sirion ahead of other cars for sale in its class. The A-pillar and Centre pillar are reinforced as is the belt-line and the door impact beams. This surrounds the occupants with a reinforced cage which will not allow an impact to crush them. The engine will move downwards in severe impacts therefore not ending up on the cabin occupants and not endangering their legs. The entire front compartment is designed to collapse without risking the passengers.

The front suspension will move outward in the case of an accident. The dash panel is further reinforced to prevent any intrusion to where the driver sits.

For 2012, Daihatsu s distributor-less engine means fewer moving parts offering better reliability and less maintenance costs. Amongst other things, there is a polymer intake manifold which means the engine reaches operating temperature quicker therefore minimising wear and tear and improving reliability. Because of its exceptional engine technologies, the Sirion s maintenance plan prices are the best in its class.

This is because the maintenance plan uses the price of parts together with how often the car will require those parts to be replaced to determine the plan package. With initial pricing including a 3yr/75 000km service plan, you can expect to pay in the region of R149 995 for the 1.3 Daihatsu Sirion Standard and R174 995 for the 1.5 Daihatsu Sirion Sport. (Prices are subject to change according to various factors so please consult your dealer for the latest price.)
