Reveal: Daihatsu s transformable D-X concept car

With a resin body, an essential interior, and a two-cylinder engine the lightweight compact Daihatsu D-X is more a sports car study than a real production-ready model. A mutated and rugged version of the tiny 2002 Copen in the roadster avatar, the D-X is a pick-a-part concept that offers customers a more varied customization experience. The D-X is a more inventive concept than the A-Concept city car which is almost certain to get a run in the South-East Asian markets.

There is no word on whether the D-X is destined for a production debut or not, but the Transformer-esque model holds more than what meets the eye.

First impression

Debuted at the Tokyo motor show, the Daihatsu D-X concept was designed to fulfill a number of varied roles via a single vehicle. By simply swapping composite body panels, you can turn your D-X from a racer to a two-door crossover, or into a hatchback from a roadster. From a two-door off-roader to sleek panel van, the D-X’s shell-like top section allows the vehicle to transform into a selection of other styles as well thanks to its resin body design though sadly the car won’t switch itself into a robot!

The powertrain

Borrowing the powertrain from the brand’s regular production models, the Daihatsu D-X concept combines turbochargers with direct-injection technologies to run the miniscule 0.66-liter two-cylinder engine. The brand has not released any power or performance figures yet, but we’re guessing the vehicle is gonna output more than a moderate level of performance on road.

The exterior and Interior

With a 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) wide and a 3.3 meters (10.8 feet) long chassis, the official renderings of the Daihatsu D-X envision the concept to be transformable into a mini off-roader, a hatchback, a roadster, and a track racer thanks to easy-to-bolt on four different body styles. The colored panels of the hood, doors and trunk lid provide a visual contrast portrayed by the wheel-arches that surround the entire vehicle that offer a rugged image though the exterior is mostly characterized by the plastic bumpers and sills. Underlining the focus on driving fun and allowing the use of the car under any condition, the interior of the concept is said to be “essential” though details about it has not been revealed just yet.

What’s new?

Different variants of the same car are made possible by the resin-based body that allows the model to morph into an original shooting-brake like version, a closed coupé, a racing-oriented barchetta, and a “base” roadster.

What’s refreshing?

The Spartan interior is boosted by a tough and aggressive exterior though the biggest USP of the concept has got to be the fact that it can morph into a variety of different body styles with the adjustment of a few nuts and bolts. A sports car that can be adjusted to both ordinary as well extraordinary usages, the DX uses new elements incorporated throughout its body to offer an unprecedented level of customization to buyers. With an economical, but powerful two-cylinder Turbocharged engine, the Daihatsu DX appears to be good enough for city drivers.

Price and availability

Daihatsu’s display booth at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show will showcase the highly versatile Daihatsu D-X concept vehicle to industry watchers and consumers and sources suggest that the feedback that the concept receives will ultimately decide whether the company will launch it as a production model or not. The brand also hasn’t released any official word on the probable pricing of the vehicle. Other details about the powertrain, driver assistance technologies and interiors of the model are likely to be released after the vehicle is officially presented to audiences at the show.
