Ferrari Introduces LaFerrari Hybrid Supercar The Shape Of Things To Come (VIDEO)

Until now, hybrid vehicles have come with the image of being either a modern form of econobox. or a marketing gimmick on fuel inefficient SUV s. One typically did not put the words high performance and hybrid in the same sentence, with sport hybrids like the Fisker Karma focusing more on economy than performance, and generally viewed as a curiosity more than a serious sports vehicle.

But Ferrari is not your typical auto maker.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, Ferrari unveiled a supercar unparalleled in their history, LaFerrari. Sporting the typical Ferrari 789 horsepower V12 one expects from an Italian supercar, it is paired off with a 161 horsepower electric motor. Combining the two, the LaFerrari can top out at just over 350km/h and go from 0-60 in under three seconds, according to Ferrari spokespeople as reported by the Los Angeles Times . The promotional video for the LaFerrari also went up earlier today, shared by Auto Week Magazine:

While one does not purchase a Ferrari, or any supercar, for fuel efficiency, its inclusion is more telling for the industry at large. It is changing, radically so. Many of the features pioneered on top-end vehicles become standard, industry wide, after a few years.

From tilting steering wheels to anti-lock brakes, innovation typically comes from high-priced luxury and sports vehicles, then spreads throughout the marketplace. For Ferrari to embrace hybrid technology, not just for a car, but for its flagship vehicle, tells us that hybrid technology is about ready to explode in the market.

Ferrari is not the only supercar manufacturer at the auto show releasing a hybrid. Ferrari s #1 competitor, British sports car manufacturer McLaren, also released its hybrid supercar, the McLaren P1 .

By using the hybrid technology to increase overall horsepower for peak periods, both auto manufacturers have shown an advantage of hybrids often times overlooked. Using this same approach in a more affordable vehicle, you could combine such a solution in a mid-sized family sedan, while using a small, fuel-efficient engine, without sacrificing the performance one expects from the vehicle. This, in turn, reduces the vehicle s pollution, helping the environment.

This opens up a huge world of possibilities for vehicles moving forward, and we find Ferrari, as ever, on the leading edge.

Which is atypical; frankly, Ferrari is not known for being a leading edge innovator. It was one of the last of the performance automakers to switch to the mid-engined form, which is now universal in the supercar market. It held off on composite construction when its competition was all-embracing.

But by doing so, Ferrari, when it did switch, changed the rules. Instead of glass fiber composite, Ferrari shipped with carbon fiber composite, producing the legendary F40. Instead of taking a regular engine and sticking it behind the seat, Ferrari designed the amazing Berlinetta with a boxer engine optimized for the job.

Ferrari is a conservative company, never innovating for innovation s sake, rather waiting for when the time, and technology, is right to leapfrog ahead.

Ferrari, by pushing its solution for the use of a hybrid for raw horsepower, is leading the way for car manufacturers seeking to make their cars fuel efficient. Ferrari s conservative design nature is a sign of how the world is shaping up, and a strong indicator of where the future lies. Hybrid cars are now a status symbol, just as electric windows once were.

Expect them to be everywhere by the end of the decade. While Ferrari was not the first, their embrace of it tells us the time of the hybrid is now .
