Ferrari had been giving away teaser images of their much awaited flagship hyper car – the LaFerrari and the automaker finally unveiled their latest product at Geneva Motor Show. Luca di Montezemolo, the president at Ferrari says that LaFerrari was chosen as the name as this car exudes excellence which has been associated with the company for a long time.

This is 1st production hybrid car from Ferrari and has 6.3L 789 bhp V12 engine inside with 120 kW (which is equivalent to 161 bhp) electric motor. It gives output of 950 bhp. V12 direct injection has maximum power output of 9,000 rpm and redlining is at 9,250 rpm. Combined torque output is over 91.8 kgm at 6,750 rpm and it is transferred to wheel through dual clutch 7 speed gear box. According to Ferrari, this car can now go from 0 to 100 kph in less than three seconds, to 200 kph in less than seven seconds and to 300 kph in 15 seconds.

This car is also five seconds faster than its predecessor, Ferrari Enzo and three seconds faster than F12 Berlinetta – which is fastest Ferrari at the moment.

The hybrid system of Ferrari – known as HY-KERS is a product of Formula 1 programme and electric motors were made with collaboration from Magnetti Marelli. Weight of battery back is 60 kgs and it is placed inside the wheelbase just like all power train components. The front-to-rear weight distribution is 41:59.

There is another electric motor for powering ancillaries of this car.

Batteries of this car are recharged during braking and when this vehicle produces more torque than what it needs. The excess torque is converted in to energy and it gets stored in batteries. Electric motor is directly coupled to gear box for making sure that recharging and power delivery are both effective. Hybrid system gives performance benefits and it also reduces emissions and improves efficiency.

Ferrari says that this car only emits 330 g/km CO2 in combined cycle. However, unlike the competing McLaren P1. this LaFerrari can’t switch to electric only mode.

Chassis of this car is made from 4 different carbon fibre types and different components such as battery housing and seats are integrated in to chassis directly for max beam stiffness and torsional rigidity. Seats can’t be adjusted and are tailored made according to the car owner. Pedals and steering are adjustable. There is also aerodynamic active aids in bodywork which are controlled using the computer inside the car. LaFerrari has magnetorheological adjustable dampers which is the latest traction control system of EF1-Trac from Ferrari.

There is also 3rd gen electronic E-diff differential.

Just like 2002 Enzo, the technology of LaFerrari will be used in other Ferrari cars in future as well. We expect the HY-KERS to come in less expensive Ferrari cars too. The price of LaFerrari is 1.3 million euros which is approx.

9.29 crores. Ferrari will only make 499 units of this car.
