199 per month – same price as model with gasoline engine

The 500e is a technology statement for Fiat, says Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne.

To make its 500e electric more appealing to shoppers, Fiat will offer the car for the same monthly lease payment as the base 500 with a gasoline engine.

Consumers may lease the $32,500 electric for $199 per month with $999 down, the same as a $16,000 base Fiat 500 Pop. Both leases are for three years.

And to help dealers cut floorplanning costs, Fiat electrics in California – the only state in which they will be sold initially – will be held at two central lots. When dealers sell one, the car will be delivered the same day to their dealership.

The Fiat 500e subcompact, which has a range of 87 miles, will go on sale in Fiat’s 25 California dealerships this month.

Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said the automaker would lose money on each 500e it sold, but said the car was a technology statement for Fiat. It also allows the company to comply with California’s Zero-Emissions-Vehicle mandate.

Although Marchionne said in January that the 500e would not be advertised aggressively and sales would be limited, the $199 per month leasing strategy and other planned marketing efforts may point in a different direction.

As part of the 500e’s rollout, Fiat has planned lunchtime drives at up to 30 large companies – such as Google Inc. – that subsidize employees’ purchase of electric vehicles. Fiat will provide lunch during the events, said Tim Kuniskis, head of the Fiat brand in North America.

Kuniskis said that the 500e was developed at a time when the Nissan Leaf was the main electric on the market.

But we all know looking out into the horizon, that (segment) goes from one car selling nothing to 18 cars selling 100,000 cars. Everybody’s going to have a car in that space. It’s going to be a very crowded marketplace, Kuniskis said.

The marketing efforts for the 500e will follow the same model used for the Fiat 500, emphasizing personalization and overcoming the hurdles that keep people from buying electric cars, Kuniskis said.

Why don’t electric cars sell today? If you’re a customer, it’s pretty simple: price, complexity, range and infrastructure, Kuniskis said. We try to take on each one of those.

The Fiat 500e will debut with a bevy of factory, government and private rebates. Federal and factory incentives subtract $9,500 from its $32,500 sticker, and California adds an additional rebate of $2,500.

Depending on where consumers live and work, buyers can qualify for additional rebates of up to $5,000, Kuniskis said.

To hold down dealer costs, Chrysler will store 500es in one of two central distribution points, in either northern or southern California, Kuniskis said.

The dealers don’t want to stock a large number of $32,000 cars because it jams up their floorplan and it cuts down on the other cars that they can stock, Kuniskis said.

So they’re going to stock two or three at their dealerships for test drives, and we’re going to keep all of the inventory in distribution centers.

Each dealership will install four charging stations to keep its small fleet of testers ready for customers.

Marchionne said the 500e eventually will be offered outside California, but given the economics, it won’t be pushed.

I will try to sell the required numbers for me to optimize compliance with the emission standards, Marchionne said, and not one more.
