2012 Ford Focus saves thousands in running

New Cars Editor 10 Feb 2011

has cranked the numbers on its all-new Ford Focus Electric to that savings in servicing alone will lead to an $1171 in the pockets of its owners.

The was made comparing the 2012 Electric with a standard 2012 Focus over the life of the vehicles (240,000km), all of the servicing areas that do not to electric vehicles:

15 oil and filter changes at $29.95 – $449.25

Five air filter at $24.95 each – $124.75

Two system flushes at $109 – $218

One transmission service –

One drive belt replacement –

One new set of spark plugs and installation –

The total saving of $1170.95 covers the cost of Ford’s charging home system, will be sold separately for $1499. (This also that there are no servicing associated with the battery or any of the EV-specific components.)

Of course, these figures the biggest vehicle running – fuel – and the vast savings EVs achieve by plugging into the rather than filling up at a station.

Ford says, its range of 160km, it will between $2 and $3 to fully recharge the Electric, at an average cost of per kWh. Over the 240,000km of the vehicle, that works out to be $3750 in electricity.

Ford says the standard Focus will get around (5.88 litres/100km) on the combined If we say unleaded fuel costs an of $1.50 per litre over the of the vehicle, that works out to be in fuel.

Ford is yet to announce the of the Focus Electric, but (based on the calculations) if it is less than more expensive than the Focus, it could be a good proposition for those who plan to it for its entire life.

Without a conventional piston or an automatic or manual transmission, director of electrification programs and Sherif Marakby, said the Electric eliminates more two dozen mechanical components would normally require during the life of the vehicle.

you have moving parts, as the gears in a transmission or the pistons in an you have maintenance,” Mr Marakby

“With an electric drive, are very few moving parts. And in the Electric, the only moving are the motor and the wheels.”

He said the Electric would be the most free and easiest to own vehicle Motor Co has ever produced.

all the driver will have to do is up the battery pack and go.”
