2013 Ford Taurus Summary

The Taurus is Ford’s fourth oldest car which is still in production. It was introduced back in 1986, and since then, it has become a part of a lot of important trends in the American automotive industry. It formed the basis for the first front-wheel drive Lincoln Continental in 1988.

The first design of the Taurus was a milestone for Ford and every other company, influencing new innovations and features in the automotive industry.

Despite the fact that Taurus lost its market share during the late 1990s to Japanese sedans, it became the best-selling car in the country between 1992 and 1996. Initially introduced as a midsize car, the Taurus became a full-size car from the year 2000. The 2013 Ford Taurus is a refreshed take on the sixth generation of the car which was introduced in 2010.

New For 2013

This year Ford adds a new 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged I-4 to the plus-sized Taurus lineup in an effort to increase its fuel economy. The base 3.5-liter V-6 gets a small horsepower bump. The Taurus SHO and its 365-hp, 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 receive better brakes and an optional performance package.

All 2013 Taurus models get freshened sheet metal and an updated interior.

Exterior

The new exterior of the 2013 Ford Taurus was shown at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The new front fascia retains the same aggressive headlights but gets a new combination of front bumper and grille similar to that of Ford’s European lineup. The rear end of the car gets a few changes too in keeping with the sporty look of the car.

The trunk lid gets a forward-swept design that looks a little out of place, however. 17-inch wheels are standard with this car, and so are body-colored front and rear bumpers and door handles, a chrome-tipped exhaust, and chrome grille accents. The 2013 Ford Taurus is available with optional 18-inch, 19-inch, or 20-inch wheels and a power sunroof.

Interior Cargo

The cabin of the 2013 Ford Taurus gets some changes as well, including the latest versions of Ford’s Sync voice activation and MyFord Touch systems. The quality of materials has also improved a lot, and so has the level of insulation in the cabin. The addition of the MyFord Touch system adds even more class to the Taurus’s interior. The front seats are very comfortable, especially with the multi-contour option with built-in massage system.

At the back, legroom and headroom is plenty for large adults as well. The trunk offers a little over 20 cubic feet of space, which is one of the biggest available in the sedan segment. The cargo space available increases even further with the rear seats folded down flat.

Despite all these plus points, the 2013 Ford Taurus is far from perfect on the inside. The tall beltline and center console and thick roof pillars make the cabin feel less spacious than it actually is.

The MyFord System, for all its cosmetic goodness, takes some time to master because of the wide range of functions it controls. This system has three display screens and three methods of input. The first is through voice commands using Ford’s Sync system, the second is through touch controls, and the third is through the steering wheel-mounted buttons. The idea that there are so many input options is a great idea, but the learning curve can frustrate some people, especially if the Taurus is their first Ford vehicle.

Even with the latest updates, the MyFord system is also slow as with previous models and the touchscreen controls are difficult to find and use when driving. Nevertheless, Ford has taken care of some of problems with the previous Taurus models. For example, the low-quality hard plastics from the previous years have been replaced by softer material.

Safety

The 2013 Ford Taurus is fitted with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, integrated blind spot mirrors, full-length side curtain airbags, and side impact airbags for the front seats as standard. The Limited and SHO models get rear parking sensors and a rearview camera as well, and the SEL gets these two as optional features. The Taurus Limited and SHO also get two optional safety systems- a pre-collision warning system with adaptive cruise control and a blind spot and cross-traffic warning system.

Driving Experience

The base engine for the 2013 Ford Taurus is a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, along with a six-speed, automatic transmission with manual shift button. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive can be chosen as an option for the Limited and SEL models. There is also an optional, turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque for the best fuel economy figures. For better performance, however, the Taurus SHO is the best bet with its twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter, V-6 engine that delivers 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

This model goes from standstill to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds, but the performance comes with an obvious hit on fuel economy.

Even with the base engine, the ride quality of the 2013 Ford Taurus is quite good. Fuel economy is better than ever before with the Taurus’s new electric-assist power steering. Irrespective of the engine choice, customers can expect a well-weighted and nimble car when they choose a 2013 Ford Taurus.

Handling is good too, but it is best with the sport-tuned suspension of the Taurus SHO.
