Ford announces electric plans

Ford has revealed a trio of electric vehicles at the North American International Auto Show, including an electric Ford Focus and an extended range electric C-Max.

The third vehicle, a full hybrid version of the C-Max, has also been unveiled by the manufacturer at the motor show.

The Ford Focus Electric and will be based on the new 2011 Ford Focus. Engineers have designed the Focus Electric to drive and feel like the more traditional petrol and diesel versions.

As it is based on the production version, Ford expects costs will be much lower to produce the Focus Electric than creating an entirely new platform in the same way Nissan did with the Leaf.

Aimed as a competitor to the Nissan Leaf, the Focus Electric can be charged in half the time of its Japanese rival but could offer the same range of 100 miles when it arrives in the UK, possibly as early as 2013.

Electric Ford C-Max

The Ford C-Max Energi was the second electric model to be unveiled by Ford in Detroit. Based on the five-seat C-Max MPV, the Energi uses an electric powertrain and is capable of driving on purely electric power.

However, a small petrol engine is also used to extend the range of the vehicle when necessary to as much as 500 miles, says Ford. This would be over 100 miles more than the Chevrolet Volt, which was voted Car of the Year for North America at the show.

It will be joined in the C-Max range by a full hybrid version of the MPV. Using a lightweight lithium-ion battery system, the C-Max hybrid is expected to improve on the fuel economy currently available in the hybrid Ford Fusion saloon, which is only available in the US.

All of the new models are based on Ford’s new C-platform, something which will reduce costs when production begins.

The electric and hybrid models will also benefit from Ford’s collaboration with Microsoft. They will be fitted with MyFord driver information systems capable of planning eco-friendly routes, managing battery recharging and offering advice on eco-driving.

Ford’s global platform

Ford has also hinted at another, as yet unnamed, next-generation hybrid vehicle which will be introduced to the European market in 2013.

However, Ford’s strategy differs from many of its rivals, who have focused on hybrid or electric technology. Very few manufacturers are offering a range of electric and hybrid alternatives in their ranges.

“One technology does not work for all customers – hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles each offer distinctly different advantages, explained Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. “By leveraging our global platforms, we are able to offer our customers more choices of electrified solutions as part of a fuel-efficient product line up.
