Ford Delivers First Transit Connect Electric Vehicle

The automotive industry took another step forward on the path to electrification recently, when fleet customers in North America and Europe began taking delivery of the first Transit Connect Electrics—all-electric versions of the popular Ford Transit Connect. It’s the first of five electrified Ford models slated to go on sale by the end of 2012.

Designed with assistance from Azure Dynamics, the Transit Connect Electric will benefit from an innovative approach to the marketplace. Ford is first targeting fleet customers with the new truck, since many of its expected applications—as an urban delivery vehicle, for example—are ideal for electric vehicles. That’s because these drivers tend to follow well-defined routes, over predictable distances, and come back to a central location each night to allow for charging.

“The Transit Connect provides a unique choice for the fleet owner who wants the convenience of a utility vehicle,” said Sherif Marakby, Ford’s director of electrification programs and engineering. “The electric version takes that one step further, delivering a dependable, zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle that requires no petroleum.”

According to Ford Des Moines. the motivating force behind the Transit Connect Electric is Azure’s “Force Drive” drivetrain technology, which leverages an advanced liquid-cooled 20-kWh lithium-ion battery pack developed by a partnership between Johnson Controls and battery maker Saft. The result is an all-electric, no-emissions driving range of up to 80 miles and a charging time of six to eight hours when hooked up to a 240-volt charge station; for added versatility, the Transit Connect Electric can use a traditional 120-volt outlet for charging as well.

Notably, there’s already strong evidence that Ford’s fleet-first strategy will be successful. All of the first batch of Transit Connect Electrics have now been scooped up by customers like ATT, Southern California Edison, Xcel Energy, Johnson Controls and the New York Power Authority, although Ford expects to reach agreements with the next round of customers before the end of the year. Connecticut Ford Dealers indicated that production of the Transit Connect Electric will ramp up in April for further availability.

And retail customers interested in the future of Ford’s electrification program won’t have to wait much longer than that either—the Ford Focus Electric is scheduled to debut in 2011 too.
