Ford Fusion Hybrid CAR review

By Ben Barry

we get too confused, I’d like to make one thing clear: we’re not about the UK Ford Fusion – the Fiesta on stilts that’s only by OAPs. No, this is the US Fusion, the large four-door and we’re testing it in hybrid

Shouldn’t it look a bit more, futuristic?

Admittedly the Toyota styling feels more and perhaps more in keeping the cutting-edge tech within, but looking ordinary is probably of the point here: the Fusion attempting to attract early it’s trying to convince families that a hybrid can for them, too. Still, it look a bit plain, like a Aussie Ford Falcon a Saab-like mask grafted to the

very comfortable (especially our car’s optional leather and spacious both in the front and the and most of the plastics have feel-good squish, not the unyieldingly surfaces we’ve previously in Ford’s US products.

Shame the auto gearstick moves P to D with such a cheap-feeling and that the hybrid system the boot: it’s already small, then you realise the hybrid system’s sandwiched up the rear seats, so you can’t them – we failed to get a medium-sized mountain bike in there, and we both its wheels and seat!

How does it drive?

Very It’s amazing, actually, how the Fusion feels compared UK Fords. The DNA is just completely yet, just as our Fords brilliantly on our roads, so this works brilliantly in the US.

The Fusion is of a relaxed, Merc-like experience its sporty-but-supple Brit cousins. The is nicely weighted and progressive if the chassis very supple if a tad the responses of the throttle and brake somewhat sleepy. But in California’s zones and on the lazy rolls and surfaces of its freeways it is perfectly

Is the hybrid bit any good?

Yes, excellent. You can sit at a standstill with the air con and blasting and the engine will resolutely inactive – take Prius. Better, it will through stop/start traffic in power too, though we came close to managing the 47mph on battery alone.

All in, we 39.5mpg – not bad for a 5-series-sized saloon 156bhp, or 191bhp with the motor included. Pleasingly, it came close to matching own claims: our 32.9 US mpg not being too far from the 41/36mpg city/highway

Any niggles

The pitiful boot and styling we’ve mentioned. than that, the engine goes unnoticed, the 2.5-litre and CVT transmission combo can all get a bit thrashy you really put your foot Also, the optional blind-spot in the side mirrors are a little (even triggering on empty lane country roads!), as are the sensors.

Rear headroom be more generous. Oh yes, and the welcome procedure takes far too the dials remaining dark seconds after you’ve the key – it wouldn’t be a problem if the engine to life, but it doesn’t, so it just – briefly – like a regular car a completely flat battery.

The Fusion is a very product to UK Fords, but it’s targeted to the needs of its domestic it’s comfortable, nice to in a relaxed kind of way and the hybrid works better than a Prius’s. A few shortfalls can’t that. We just wish it better (big brother looks so confident in comparison) and had a boot.

Will the tech to the UK? Not likely in this Mondeo-sized – Ford Europe seems happy with its highly diesels.
