What can it when the airbag light on in my 2004 Ford Escape?

worried sick as I have 10 miles left on my original 75, 000 warranty. And if the light decides to on after the diagonistic work is when I’m going after being told is wrong.

When a 2001 2004 Ford Escape air bag flashes code 36, one of four could exist in the circuit the Restraints Control Module to the left side air bag (the air bag in the seat, not the main air bag in the steering

1. DTC B1992 — Left air bag circuit short to battery or

2. DTC B1993 — Left air bag circuit short to ground

3. DTC — Left side air bag resistance high

4. DTC B1995 Left side air bag circuit low

In order to determine which of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes exist, you will probably to have the codes scanned at a shop. Most trouble scanners available to the DIY mechanic scan for powertrain codes.

It is that you have code (left side air bag circuit resistance) since Ford has a Technical Service Bulletin for this code. The same bulletin applies to code (same problem, right air bag). The TSB states that problem can be caused by a variation in continuity at the electrical connector to the air bag.

The connector is located under the Ford makes a replacement harness pigtail connector part number 1L8Z-14A411-A) to fix problem.

I had the same air bag trouble 36 flashing intermittently on my 2004 Escape which I bought In my case, I discovered that a dealer had already replaced the connectors on both the left and side air bags. Using my I found high resistance in one of the splices that was made by the shop. They had just the wires together and then the connection with heat tubing.

I fixed it by making a solder and sealing the splice with shrink tubing.

You can identify the body harness pigtail because the wire color is a bit different than the original. The pigtail connectors have one BLU wire and one WHT/YEL wire replacement pigtail connector for left and right). The original colors are:

Left — RED and WHT/LT BLU

The air bag connectors are located under the (driver or passenger). The wiring either of these connectors directly to the RCM which is located the center of the dash. The RCM is bolted to the tunnel.

There are two electrical on the module. The side air bag wires are in the smaller connector and can be identified by code as described above. you remove the electrical connector the RCM, each pair of going to the side air bags are together in the connector (safety to prevent accidental deployment of the air bags).

With the RCM connector removed, you can the connector under the seat and your ohmmeter across the two located in the body harness There should be less 1 ohm resistance. In my case, I found from about 0.5 ohms to 65 ohms as I moved the wires

If all Ford dealers make the by just twisting the wires of the pigtail connector together, I imagine that there are a lot of out there experiencing this problem intermittently.
