Ford’s new all-compact Transit Connect commercial van to achieve up to 30 mpg

New Ford Transit Connect van will save big gas bucks for bands, those in the trades, and delivery people with its 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect van will average 30 miles or more per gallon.

“Get in the van” will no longer necessarily mean “Get out your wallet every 5 hours” if Ford’s all-new Transit Connect commercial van catches on. With its sliding side doors, side-hinged rear cargo doors, two wheelbase lengths and a choice of two fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engines with EcoBoost power, the Transit Connect commercial van is expected to fetch at least 5 miles per gallon better fuel economy on the highway than Ram C/V Cargo Van while carrying more payload than a full-size Ram 1500 pickup truck, says the company.

Those are bold claims, and Ford’s recently been in hot water for exaggerating mileage of new vehicles, particularly its C-Max Hybrid wagon and Fusion Hybrid Sedan. Mileage will also depend, of course, on whether you’re hauling a van full of Styrofoam peanuts or lead pipes.

But the Transit Connect mileage numbers look do-able on paper, at least, and this is therefore a van to watch in 2013. Global commercial vehicle sales are expected to sharply rise in the coming years, and as gas and diesel prices continue to hold steady or climb, people who haul stuff as part of their job are going to need a way to keep down expenses.

The Transit Connect Van is offered in two wheelbase lengths, in XL and XLT series, and can handle a 1,600-pound payload and provides more than 130 cubic feet of cargo space. It also offers North American customers a choice between two fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines – a standard 2.5-liter and an optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost® estimated to deliver 30+ mpg on the highway. Its 2.5-liter engine can also be rigged with a compressed natural gas/liquid propane gas (CNG/LPG) preparation package, enabling convenient conversion by Ford-certified upfit specialists.

Best of all, the Transit Connect cargo van feels and parks like a car, says Ford.

“We have completely reengineered Transit Connect with North American business owners top of mind,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of The Americas. “This all-new cargo hauler offers entrepreneurs and fleet owners a unique combination of leading fuel efficiency, cargo capacity and maneuverability.”

The Transit Connect will be joined by the all-new 2014 Ford Transit full-size van, which will provide professional tradesmen and commercial fleet motorists with a diverse assortment of trims.
