Fuel Mileage Test with Scott

The Story

at Hybrid Cars and Alt Fuels, we a lot of questions about hybrids, and the most common of all is simply, Are really worth it? Do hybrids get that much better mileage than regular is it enough to justify their premium? Well, we always do a crunch as part of our hybrid but we’ve never actually a real side-by-side comparison, relying on EPA mileage estimates of the versus our observed hybrid fuel mileage to draw

This works pretty but the more I (Scott) thought it, the more I wanted to do a little test of my own to see what’s what in the world.

So, I needed a car that is in both conventional and hybrid and I needed to put them both the same types of driving carefully track all data—to get as as possible to an apples-to-apples comparison. testorama would give me a solid no arguments here of data to unequivocally say X car in hybrid performed this way against X car a regular engine. Having completed a test drive of the Honda Civic Hybrid (in I did extensive fuel mileage I decided that this car and its and efficient (and comparably brother, the Honda Civic EX, be my guinea pigs.

Honda agreed and sent a beautiful Alabaster Silver Civic EX sedan, and I commenced to

I was pretty confident that be able to handily beat the EPA in the EX by simply employing some of my Thrifty-Drive techniques —the I used when test the Civic Hybrid. I’ve steadily honing these over the years and it’s to the point that I can best the numbers by 15 percent or more for any vehicle. I just slow and drive gently, which enough, gets me there in about the same amount of as aggressive yellow-light-running driving but at a much better bang-for-the-buck-for-the-minute

The Drivetrains

Honda Civic EX: My EX came outfitted with the 140 hp 1.8-liter iVTEC 4-cylinder and optional 5-speed automatic It’s a nice package plenty of power and great economy numbers, thanks to thrifty variable valve scheme. The EPA gives the EX 25/36/29 ratings.

Honda Civic The hybrid version gets its own purpose-built drivetrain package of a 110 hp 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and motor combination that power to the wheels through a CVT EPA ratings for this package in at 40/45/42 city/highway/combined. For more on how this unique drivetrain see our 2008 Honda Civic test drive and review .

The Tests

Because of the nature of city driving, with its distances between numerous and stops, it’s difficult to Thrifty-Drive techniques and improve on EPA For this reason, I limited my comparos to all-highway and then (an assortment of roadways and traffic situations, and I further divided by eco-styles and normal styles. I at this point, it’s to define what I call driving.

In short, it’s behavior that I observe my daily travels out on the roads thousands of other motorists: rabbit starts. not slowing (or accelerating) on highway exit speeding to stop signs then jamming-on the brakes at the moment). and of course, my favorite constantly jockeying and darting to get of the next guy.

The Four Tests and Results

All numbers are expressed in miles per

Normal highway — freeway runs using no and changing lanes frequently to pace with the fastest (usually between 75 and 80 mph).

Eco combined — trips using the eco-techniques in Scott’s Thrifty-Drive .

Honda Civic Electric Cars

Eco highway — long jaunts with cruise set at a 61 mph.

EX—42.3, Hybrid—54.7

the Results

These test leave little doubt the Honda Civic (hybrid or no) excellent fuel economy. when driven hard, I was able to pretty much EPA ratings across-the-board. My experience has been that the more a vehicle is, the less adversely its economy is affected by aggressive habits. Conversely, economy respond better to eco-driving than their large, efficient counterparts.

While both cars well to eco-driving, the EX did a little in the combined mileage tests, the hybrid aced the highway

What gives here? It to me that the engine-only EX is more influenced by easy driving/light techniques in combined roadway where the engine could/would be taxed during frequent On the highway, a steady throttle can do so much.

On the other hand, on roadways in the hybrid, the electric mitigates some of the driver’s for easing load on the engine hybrid system does it But on the open highway, the combination of the cylinder deactivation and steady motor assist allows the to work with minimal use.

So, Is the Hybrid Civic Worth It?

In most cases, I so, and under the right conditions, Just look at the fuel numbers. The hybrid bested the EX in category, some by a larger than others.

Depending on the types of driving the Civic Hybrid owner most regularly encounter, pay time will likely within a four to six and a half period of ownership. (Based $3055 hybrid price $525 hybrid tax credit 12/08*, 15,000 miles/year and gasoline @ $3.95/gallon).
