Honda CR-Z hybrid

Sporty, efficient and inexpensive – the company’s description of the Honda CR-Z makes it the perfect all-rounder. It is seen as a spiritual successor to the Honda CR-X both in name and design, but with a new green focus to reflect demand and continue to establish Honda as one of the leading green car manufacturers in the world.

History of the Honda CR-Z Hybrid

The Honda CR-X was one of the most popular sporty consumer cars of its generation. It was first produced in 1984 and there was even a high fuel economy version of the vehicle released to the American market more than decade before hybrid cars made their initial breakthrough.

Though production of the vehicle ceased in 1991 its legacy remains and the four-seat CR-Z is seen in many circles as its successor – although the Honda CR-Z has a clear identity of its own.

It was introduced as a concept car at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, aiming to explore the concept of a sports car that is fun to drive but has minimal impact on the environment. It features the hybrid integrated motor assist (IMA) power train which serves to lower emissions and boost fuel economy.

The Japanese design team states that CR-Z stands for Compact Renaissance – Zero.

Environmental credentials of the Honda CR-Z Hybrid

The Honda CR-Z is further proof of a new era for green cars. No longer are hybrids, and other green vehicles, slow and clunky models that do not offer a viable alternative. Instead they represent a new generation of motor vehicles with a clear environmental focus that do not sacrifice performance or style.

As such it should hold great appeal to drivers of sporty vehicles, particularly those looking to save cash on fuel expenses in tough financial times.

As with all hybrid cars, the Honda CR-Z combines a petrol engine with an electric motor – this will power the vehicle when it is cruising and it will be possible for the vehicle to run in electric mode during slow moving traffic, therefore producing no direct emissions. The electric motor will also be assisted by regenerative braking helping the car to produce its own energy.

There are no official figures currently available regarding its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or fuel consumption but it is expected to be extremely competitive in its class.
