How to Change the Stereo in a Honda Civic Type R

Things you need

Instructions

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative lead of the Honda battery. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable s clamp. Remove the clamp from the lead and rest it away from the lead post.

Remove the two screws on the dash panel below the stereo with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Open the glovebox. Remove the screw at the top left of the opened compartment. Push the thin sides of the glove-compartment door inward to disengage the rubber stops that prevent the door from opening fully. Let the door hang.

Remove the screw at the lower left of the opening.

Remove the three screws on the dash panel below the steering column. The screws are located at the bottom corners of the panel (2) and below the defrost button (1). Remove the panel by hand and remove the screw that will now be accessible at the top right of the panel s opening.

Remove the dash panel below the stereo by hand. Remove the four screws that were hidden by the panel using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Pull the dash trim that houses the stereo from the dash just far enough to reach the wire connections at the back of the radio. Pull the connections from the unit by hand. Grab the plastic wire group binders, not the wires themselves.

Remove the two screws on either side of the stereo mounting bracket with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the stereo from the bracket. Insert a faceplate adaptor into the mounting bracket.

The faceplate adaptor will solve any incompatibility between the Honda mounting bracket and the new stereo.

Insert the new stereo into the faceplate adaptor. Connect the wire groups to a wiring harness adaptor. The adaptor will be clearly marked to show where the connections are to be made (either by abbreviations or colour codes).

Connect the wiring harness leads to the new stereo.

Replace the screws on either side of the mounting bracket and return the bracket into the dash of the Civic.

Replace the dash panel below the stereo by hand. The panel will snap into place by hand.

Screw in the screw on the upper-right corner beneath the steering column. Replace the dash panel below the steering column and replace the screws (two at the lower corners, one below the defrost button).

Replace the screw at the bottom left corner of the glovebox opening. Replace the screw at the top left corner of the glovebox opening. Replace the glovebox to its resting position by reattaching the rubber stops at either corner; push outward on the glove box sides.
