2013 Honda Civic Hybrid Overview

Just one year after its 2012 makeover, the 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid gets another comprehensive redesign for the new model year that addresses many of the shortcomings of the 2012 model.

Last year’s Civic family was also redesigned and it’s uncommon to see a car get another makeover so soon. But the 2012 version of the Civic was not well received (even though it did sell rather well), so Honda went back to the drawing board and in a little over a year, came back with a brand new 2013 version and we’re glad they did.

The changes to the 2013 Civic Hybrid mirror those for the gas-only Civic sedan. Exterior styling has been changed to a more muscular, aggressive look that stands out more than the previous design. The front bumper has been lowered, making a larger grille, while chrome accents pop out from the lower part of the grille and the front fascia. Out back, there’s even more of the shiny stuff between reworked taillights. All in all, where the 2012 model was anonymous, the 2013 model looks upscale and sharp.

The Hybrid does get a few styling quirks all its own, with blue accents in the grilled, unique wheels, and hybrid badging.

Under the metal, the 2013 Civic Hybrid uses the same hybrid system as the 2012 but does get updates to the suspension, steering, and brakes. Everything has been sharpened; the suspension is stiffer and reduces body roll, the steering ratio tightened so turn-in is quicker, and larger front disc-brakes on higher trim levels mean greater stopping power. The Civic Hybrid uses a 90-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT in conjunction with an electric motor for a combined output of 110-horsepower.

Fuel economy numbers are high, at 44/44 mpg city/highway.

As extensively as the exterior was remade for 2013, the interior got just as much love and attention with upgraded materials, more comfortable seats, and even more standard features. The dashboard and doors are now completely covered in soft-touch surfaces instead of hard plastic; even the headliner got an upgrade. Standard features include automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, USB/iPod input, Pandora internet radio, steering wheel controls, and an updated version of Honda’s i-MID display.

The system gets a larger five-inch screen and can display text messages, fuel economy, or other information. Leather upholstery and navigation are optional.

The 2013 Civic Hybrid also got some exciting new safety features, including a standard backup camera and a new front body structure designed to better handle new crash test from the IIHS. Forward collision warning and lane departure warning are also standard, joining six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system.
