How to avoid CVT gearbox failures in City, Fit and Jazz (Sri perspective)

I recently was looking to buy a honda city vehicle the Honda Fit, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Fit for and paid a visit to my local to get some advise on the car. very first response was don t buy it the gearbox is not reliable .  Now coming from the local agent, when the Honda CVT has a solid reputation worldwide was disturbing since my research on the web regard to the car and the gearbox had a very view!

Probing further I inquired the technician why he said it was not reliable , and he some very useful

The gearbox he felt was not suitable for city conditions as the wear and on the belt was on the lower gears as conditions were 90% urban, and 10% with zero highway in Sri Lanka.  This was very for driving within the Colombo and suburbs, where bumper to traffic conditions were the and due to close proximity of traffic and congestion, there was a very percentage of stop-wait-go scenarios.

The gearbox could not be repaired and a replacement had to be done in the event of a failure

Vehicles wore reconditioned (used in Japan or and hence already had a lot of miles, and the based transmission had a shorter compared to the traditional auto resulting in failures.

Many were not aware of CVT gearboxes and them as normal auto and hence the oil changes were in intervals of 40-60K

The responses were quite since these were not the of facts i saw in any blog related to fit, Jazz CVT gearbox

The fact is that the CVT gearboxes do more attention than the auto gearboxes, and the reasons i identify were,

Honda now changing of the CVT gearbox oil every periods for normal driving and 20K intervals for extreme driving  However based on the information, the levels mentioned by Honda, the city driving scenarios as in Sri Lanka are far more extreme. and the transmission oil should be replaced 10K (15K at most) in order to the gearbox does not fail.

Initially the transmission oil used for CVT was the as the standard auto boxes, but now recommends that a special CVT oil be which has better lubrication. on research it seems even the CVT is not the best and there are third making oils that are more suited for CVT gearboxes. point being CVT gearboxes special transmission oils auto gearbox oils are NOT

If the owners do take care of the oil I am positively sure the failures be minimal, though the question if the is as durable as the standard auto is as many sites have that a well cared CVT has a lifespan of 120-160K km, while an box will last far longer minimal maintenance!

The question of if the CVT failure requires a full change of course is uncertain, as it the belt can be replaced (along some other parts) for a of the cost of the gearbox.  Would be if somebody can confirm on this.
