Used cars: 2010-13 Honda Insight

Honda Insight was new for model year 2010

The first hybrid passenger car to be sold in Canada was the Honda Insight in 1999, which beat the Toyota Prius to market by seven months. That first generation Insight was a 2-passenger model that got exceptional fuel economy, but it did not sell well compared to the 5-passenger Prius and production ended in 2006. In 2009, for model year 2010, Honda brought out an all new, bigger Insight with seating for five and wedge-shaped styling that was much more mainstream. Recently it was announced that Honda would once again cancel Insight production. That is not supposed to happen until some time this summer, but Insight is already missing from the list of new cars available on the Honda Canada website.

Insight came in three trim levels — base, LX and EX — but only one powertrain was offered — an electrically assisted 4-cylinder engine making 98 hp and mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

THE GOOD STUFF

Although Insight has been one of the more fuel efficient automobiles available, with an Energy Canada ratting of 4.7L/100 km city and 4.4L/100 km highway, those numbers are bested by both the regular Prius and Prius c. Priced to beat Prius, Honda’s “mild hybrid” system uses the electric motor only for added boost. This so-called Integrated Motor Assist system is cheaper to produce than a full hybrid and reliability has been better than average. On EX models, paddle shifters allow the driver to engage manual shift mode.

After crash testing an Insight EX in 2009, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made it a Top Safety Pick.

“The ride is stiff and choppy and road noise is pronounced,” said Consumer Reports. “Handling lacks agility and can be tricky at the limits.” (Other publications, however, found Insight fun to drive.) Insight can seat three abreast in the rear seat, but it will be uncomfortable for more than two adults. Front seats are a throwback to Civics of the 1990s, lacking both padding and support. Not recommended for long trips.

Honda Freed Electric Cars

Even though Insight got a mild facelift and additional features in 2012 (upgraded upholstery on LX, automatic headlamps on EX, etc.) it couldn’t keep sales from tanking.

The original Insight of 2000-2006 was funky and had the benefit of novel looks. But there is no compelling reason to own one of these from the second generation — even if you are a Honda fan. The Civic hybrid gets better fuel economy.

PRICES AT A GLANCE

Note: These are asking prices, not selling prices, in a cross-Canada survey using Autonet.ca and other sources. Most of the used models available are from model year 2010 when Insight sold reasonably well. After that, they become harder and harder to find.
