Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) products

in Australia and New Zealand.

DC Electronics is pleased to announce that it has appointed Ultimate Power Steering as the distributor of its Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) products.

They are compact units, requiring only a battery connection to work and have a substantial weight saving advantage over hydraulic systems.

What are the benefits and how does the Electric Power Assist Steering work?

How it works

The EPAS system is installed into the existing steering column.

An electric motor and torque sensor are fitted inside with the steering column.

The torque sensor monitors the amount of force applied by the steering wheel.

This signal is fed into the EPAS factory ECU where the motor delivers the appropriate amount of assistance to power the steering rack or box.

Small compact units, requiring only a battery connection to work.

No messy hydraulic connections or systems to bleed.

Weight saving advantage over hydraulic systems.

Reduced mechanical drag on engine compared to hydraulic engine driven pumps.

Built-in fail-safe which allows the system to revert to conventional steering in the unlikely event of a fault occurring.

We Stock (EPAS) systems that have been developed by Ultimate Power Steering and DC Electronics.

These systems are available for Motor Sport applications in a few different levels.

Basic Motorsport Kits (We have 2 Versions available)

EPAS Kit 1 (With Blank Input Shaft)

This system can be mounted anywhere between the steering wheel and the steering rack or steering box. The torque sensor is within the motor/Gearbox unit. The Steering Column is driven by an Electric Motor ECU a Signal Generating Unit (SGU) is supplied so the user can adjust the steering effort to within the ECU settings. The maximum torque output of this kit is 40Nm. (The ECU can be upgraded to the Lite ECU at any stage and the maximum torque is increased to 70Nm.)

This kit is designed to help installation, a blank input shaft is supplied to allow the installer to adapt the input shaft into almost any application.

The kit contains Motor / Gearbox unit, Input Shaft adaptor (Can be machined to fit your steering wheel / hub), Output shaft Coupling (Can be split to allow fitment to your Manual steering unit), Locking pin and safety collar, Signal Generating Unit (This allows the user to adjust the steering effort)

Speed Sensitive Upgrade “ Now Available ”

We now have an Upgraded Loom that can be added to the EPAS Kit-1 or the EPAS Kit-2 to make the units speed sensitive. The “PSGU” simply plugs into the ECU and via a wheel speed sensor this makes the systems speed sensitive. For more information please contact us on (07) 3889 7077.

Longer Input Shaft Upgrade “Now Available”

We now stock a longer input shaft designed to fit our EPAS Kit-1.

This longer shaft has been made to help with installation of our Basic EPAS Kit-1 systems.

The shaft is 400mm long this is 200mm longer than the shaft normally supplied in the EPAS Kit-1 the shaft can be machined to take your steering wheel or quick-release hubs.

EPAS Kit 2 (With Collapsible Steering Section)

This kit is the same as the EPAS Kit 1 but the input shaft has a collapsible steering column section attached to the top of the motor / gearbox unit. This kit can be installed into road cars, but the installation will have to be approved by your engineer. The installation must be approved under the steering modification / conversion code’s LS1 or LS2 via the relevant transport approved engineer.

This system also can be mounted anywhere between the steering wheel and the steering rack or steering box. The maximum torque output of this kit is 40Nm. (The ECU can be upgraded to the Lite ECU at any stage and the maximum torque is increased to 70Nm.)

This kit is designed to allow the installer to adapt the EPAS kit into almost any road car application.

EPAS Kit 4 Motorsport Assembly (EPAS Motorsport Assembly)

This Motorsport Assembly (EPAS) system is specifically designed for the demands of the motorsport environment. By reducing the weight and removing the mechanical drag of conventional hydraulic systems, we have been able to increase performance, reduce driver fatigue and consequently cut lap times. This system is a smaller motor and gearbox assembly than the Basic Motorsport kits. There is two levels of ECU controllers, both are programmable ECU’s, they simply plug into the Motorsport Assembly EPAS motor and allows the user to adjust the range of steering effort to and allows a wider and finer range of adjustment to the basic systems. This system can be mounted anywhere between the steering wheel and the steering rack or steering box. The torque sensor is within the motor/Gearbox unit. The maximum torque output of this kit is 70Nm.

Lite ECU (Motorsport EPAS Systems Only)

This entry level ECU is designed to handle transient currents of up 60 amps. Connection is via an 18 way PCB header. This system:

Has dedicated fault lamp output.

Power level adjustable by rotary switch.


Optional software disk available to tune ECU to vehicle and monitor real time ECU operation.

Ultra ECU (Motorsport EPAS Systems Only)

This Ultra ECU has been designed to handle transient currents of up to 100 amps. Connection is via 2 Autosport connectors. The ECU has the same functionality of the EPAS Lite ECU, but with the following additional features:

CAN 2.06 interface.

4 x Digital outputs.

2 x Speed inputs.

2 x Digital inputs.

3 x Analogue inputs.

Internal heatsink temperature monitoring.

Ability to create your own steering map when optional software is used.

Internal temperature and peak current tell tales.

The CAN Bus can be used to control the power levels or input ground speed to make the unit speed sensitive. Information on the systems settings and performance is also available on the CAN Bus Interface.

Lightweight Assembly (EPAS Lightweight Assembly)

The latest EPAS innovation from DC Electronics is the lightweight assembly. The torque sensor has been removed from the custom made gearbox assembly, making the distance between input and output spines short to aid installation.

With the torque sensor removed the unit is smaller, plus:

The unit can be installed with either shaft used for input or output again making installation easier

No torsion bar is fitted internally making a direct connection between input and output spines. This gives the driver a much better feel for the track conditions.

Torque sensing is done by using either a clamp around or steering boss sensors, coupled to the EPAS Ultra ECU.

Also available for all systems are a range of universal joints, steering wheel bosses and interconnection shafts.
